\nLet\u2019s be real:\u00a02020 has been a year like no other.\u00a0But while the trials and tribulations the world has faced have had the attention,\u00a0we\u2019re going to talk about the good things \u2013 from\u00a0the little wins, to the moments of growth and self-discovery,\u00a0as well as some of the bigger silver linings that have\u00a0come out of the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re glass half full kind of people. And we want to move into 2021 more positive and more hopeful than ever before, and this seems like a good place to start. So\u00a0here are 20 good things that\u00a0happened\u00a0in 2020.<\/p>\n

20. We\u00a0had the\u00a0chance to rewild the\u00a0planet<\/h3>\n

This year\u00a0David Attenborough\u00a0brought us his legacy film \u2018A Life\u00a0on Our Planet<\/a>\u2019,\u00a0(if you haven\u2019t seen it, you\u00a0must!)\u00a0where he\u00a0stressed\u00a0the importance of rewilding the planet. This\u00a0started to happen in small ways\u00a0in 2020, with\u00a0fewer\u00a0travellers\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0tourist\u00a0hotspots\u00a0and many places\u00a0around the world\u00a0seeing\u00a0an increase in\u00a0wildlife returning<\/a>.\u00a0While\u00a0no travel\u00a0at all isn\u2019t the answer, we need to\u00a0ensure we\u00a0respect the environment, support animal conservation, and continue to look for ways to\u00a0combat\u00a0overtourism\u00a0in\u00a0popular destinations.<\/p>\n

19. You got active<\/h3>\n

Lockdown exercise trends\u00a0and the increase in people partaking in daily exercise\u00a0led to a rise in demand for\u00a0active adventures<\/a>\u00a0when travelling.\u00a0According to our digital insights,\u00a0you were twice as likely to search for active travel experiences\u00a0like\u00a0hiking<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0cycling<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 than\u00a0in\u00a0previous years.<\/p>\n

18. You showed\u00a0compassion for people less fortunate<\/h3>\n

As Gandhi once said, \u2018you must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are\u00a0dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.\u2019 While it would be easy to focus on some of the ugly displays of human nature this year, there was also\u00a0a lot of kindness.\u00a0For example, \u2018Project Tablets<\/a>\u2019, when\u00a0generous donors made it possible for Education for All and The Intrepid Foundation to deliver 25 tablets to Moroccan girls in their villages, so they could continue their studies\u00a0despite schools closing in remote mountain areas.<\/p>\n

17. Australia was recognised\u00a0in Lonely Planet\u2019s annual\u00a0Best In Travel Awards<\/h3>\n

As an Australian owned company, we were\u00a0pretty stoked\u00a0when Australia\u00a0received\u00a0the \u2018Community Restoration<\/a>\u2019 award\u00a0from Lonely Planet,\u00a0in recognition of its recovery efforts at both a local and national level to rebuild communities and preserve Australia\u2019s unique wildlife following the 2019\/20 summer bushfires.\u00a0The Intrepid community displayed\u00a0amazing generosity\u00a0at the start of the year by donating\u00a0over AUD $700,000 for communities affected by the fires\u00a0in\u00a0our\u00a0Bushfire Emergency Appeal.<\/p>\n

16. The pandemic forced you\u00a0to discover new passions<\/h3>\n

While travel (and life) as we knew it halted, many of\u00a0you\u00a0took the time to discover new hobbies and passions \u2013 and this extended to travel too. Take\u00a0this\u00a0Intrepid\u00a0traveller\u2019s story<\/a>\u00a0as an example: when the\u00a0restrictions in London eased in the middle of the year, Neringa went on a cycling trip… even though she didn\u2019t own a bike!<\/p>\n

15. You\u2019ve supported the tourism industry in\u00a0our\u00a0time of need<\/h3>\n

With international travel all but halted for much of the year, many of the communities around the world that rely on tourism income had to change\u00a0tacks\u00a0to survive. In Tanzania, the\u00a0Kilimanjaro Porter\u2019s Assistance Project<\/a>\u00a0pivoted from helping\u00a0travellers\u00a0climb Kili to\u00a0teaching their porters\u00a0organic farming practices, to give\u00a0them\u00a0and their communities\u00a0another source of sustainable income\u00a0and food.\u00a0But they couldn\u2019t have done\u00a0it\u00a0without the support of donors and past\u00a0travellers\u00a0from around the world.<\/p>\n

14. You loved exploring closer to home<\/h3>\n

While long-haul travel has been tricky,\u00a0you’ve made the most of getting out and exploring\u00a0your own backyards. So far in 2020, we\u2019ve\u00a0taken\u00a0166\u00a0travellers\u00a0on a trip in their local region\u00a0and already\u00a0have 390\u00a0more people\u00a0booked\u00a0on\u00a0our\u00a0new range of local tours<\/a>\u00a0departing in\u00a02021.<\/p>\n

13. There has been progress in combatting the climate crisis<\/h3>\n

The events of this year have given many of us the time and space to reflect on the world around us \u2013 including the way we address\u00a0the\u00a0climate crisis.\u00a0A rise in the conversation around conscious travel and consideration for sustaining communities and regenerating the environment were some of\u00a0the key climate wins this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

12. You were reminded of the forever connection between travel and food<\/h3>\n

With less options for eating out available, many of you branched out and tried to\u00a0recreate some of your favourite dishes from your travels at home<\/a>. While the bowl of pho might not quite have tasted as good as the one you had in Hanoi last year, or the\u00a0cup\u00a0of chai just wasn\u2019t quite the same as when you sipped it on the streets of Mumbai, we all had a renewed\u00a0appreciation for the interconnectedness\u00a0of travel and food memories.<\/p>\n

11. We had some tough but important conversations\u00a0about\u00a0inclusivity<\/h3>\n

Among the tumult of the global pandemic, the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement shone a light on many issues with regards to racial inequality that are at the forefront of the world\u00a0\u2013 and indeed, travel industry\u00a0\u2013 today. While these topics are no doubt uncomfortable to address, they reaffirmed\u00a0how important openness<\/a> around these\u00a0conversations are, and that working to make anti-racism<\/a> a feature of all our decision-making, is of critical importance.<\/p>\n

10. A ‘clean bathroom\u2019 should never be the highlight of your Trip Advisor review again<\/h3>\n

From now on, all good hotels, aeroplanes and restaurants should be in line with the new\u00a0World Travel and Tourism Council\u2019s Safe Travels\u00a0protocols<\/a>, meaning you\u2019re less likely to come across grimy bathrooms or bed bugs on your future travels!<\/p>\n

9. The safe and responsible\u00a0return of (some) travel<\/h3>\n

As the year progressed, some\u00a0of you were excited to have the opportunity to explore regions a little closer to home, in a safe and responsible way. Like one traveller who joined an Intrepid trip in November and had this to say\u00a0about travel during the pandemic:<\/p>\n

“The trip was wonderful\u00a0\u2013\u00a0we\u00a0were in great hands all week with\u00a0our leaders,\u00a0Valentina and Ricardo.\u00a0I felt that Intrepid took our safety very seriously and\u00a0I\u00a0felt comfortable with\u00a0mask wearing\u00a0and\u00a0sanitising. I also felt that\u00a0all of\u00a0the restaurants, activities and accommodation took cleanliness very seriously.\u00a0Valentina did a great job of sharing information and stories with us, and all of the local guides we had at the various stops were truly some of the best I have ever had.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

8. You still made global\u00a0connections, from the comfort of home<\/h3>\n

Even though people couldn’t travel they found ways to connect with their\u00a0favourite\u00a0locals.\u00a0Urban Adventures at Home Online Experiences<\/a>\u00a0offered\u00a0a range of virtual activities\u00a0from\u00a0hands-on cooking classes to city walks\u00a0with local guides. And some of you\u00a0made the most of\u00a0online\u00a0retail therapy, with\u00a0guided virtual shopping tours\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Marrakech\u00a0souks through\u00a0Local Purse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

7. The rise of slow travel<\/h3>\n

After the\u00a0craziness of this year, it\u2019s no surprise a lot of you were eager to take a step back and slow things down. The demand for slower, more immersive travel experiences was heard loud and clear, and our\u00a0range of\u00a0new\u00a0Intrepid\u00a0Retreats<\/a>\u00a0across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, Africa and the Middle East\u00a0proved popular with those looking for an opportunity to\u00a0relax and\u00a0unwind closer to home.<\/p>\n

6. 2040 felt closer than ever (in a good way)<\/h3>\n

With the\u00a0release of the popular sustainability documentary, 2040<\/a>, in the US, the future of a regenerative planet felt closer than ever.\u00a0The film explores what the future could look like by 2040 if we embrace the best climate solutions that exist today, and dive into how the travel industry can adapt to become more sustainable.<\/p>\n

5. The tourism industry got behind rebuilding responsibly post-COVID<\/h3>\n

Similarly, the tourism industry took stock and\u00a0recognised\u00a0that,\u00a0in order to bounce back from the\u00a0challenges\u00a0the pandemic has presented stronger than ever, we need to\u00a0rebuild responsibly<\/a>.\u00a0As\u00a0Intrepid\u2019s\u00a0CEO, James Thornton put it, \u201cwe shouldn’t be aspiring for things to go back to normal, but rather redefine what normal means and use this period of travel stagnation to focus on rebuilding our businesses more ethically and sustainably, so that the earth is preserved for future generations to explore.”<\/p>\n

4. We were reminded that planning future adventures\u00a0is\u00a0good for mental health<\/h3>\n

Even if you weren\u2019t\u00a0in a position\u00a0to hop on a plane\u00a0immediately, planning a future adventure can be almost as satisfying. A\u00a02014 Cornell University study\u00a0<\/a>delved into how the anticipation of a trip can increase a person\u2019s happiness substantially and an earlier study, published by the\u00a0University of Surrey in 2002<\/a>, found that people are at their happiest when they have a vacation planned.<\/p>\n

3. The importance of time with\u00a0loved ones was amplified<\/h3>\n

Whether you were\u00a0stuck\u00a0at home\u00a0with them\u00a0for months on end,\u00a0or\u00a0kept\u00a0apart, the importance of friends, family and the human connections we crave helped us all remember what is really important \u2013 both\u00a0when we travel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0in\u00a0life\u00a0in general.<\/p>\n

2. We\u2019ll never take travel for granted again<\/h3>\n

When something you love is taken away from you, you tend to reflect on it more than usual. That\u2019s how we felt about travel this year. So, when it is safe to travel again you should make it count \u2013 take the\u00a0dream trip you\u2019ve\u00a0been putting off<\/a>, seek an adventure you wouldn\u2019t have dared to chase before or treat yourself to a holiday \u2013 you deserve it, after all.<\/p>\n

1. 2020 is finally\u00a0coming to an end!<\/h3>\n

All jokes aside, we are very much looking forward to a better and brighter 2021. Thanks to the Intrepid community for your support, words of encouragement and\u00a0beautiful stories this year<\/a>.\u00a0Let’s make sure there are more than 20 things to be grateful for in 2021!<\/p>\n
