The Portuguese capital has a scruffy, sun-soaked charm that\u2019s as hard to pinpoint as it is to resist. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s name stems from old Phoenician words <em>allis ubbo<\/em>, meaning \u2018enchanting port\u2019.\u00a0 Perhaps I should have heeded this before arriving. But that\u2019s the thing about Lisbon; its allure creeps up on you.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike its European neighbours, Lisbon doesn\u2019t woo by flaunting grandiose architecture, extravagant dining or ancient monuments (although it has all these, and predates both Rome and London).<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the city\u2019s streets see old and new sandwiched together under terracotta rooftops. It\u2019s a modest mishmash of small-town community and metropolitan hustle, traditional life rubbing shoulders with party culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EXPLORE OUR RANGE OF ADVENTURES AROUND PORTUGAL NOW<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though I fell ill for half my stay in Lisbon (an unfortunate stroke of fate), I couldn\u2019t resist the pull of this coastal city. And it\u2019s high praise when love can blossom through bouts of nausea.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five ways Lisbon will win over your heart, and give you a touch of sickness \u2013 love sickness.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. I recommend the Manteigaria bakery\u2026 and dare you to stop at one.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Saudade is used to describe a feeling of longing, nostalgia and aching love at all once. A local described it to me as \u2018felt absence\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the best way to understand saudade is to hear <em>fado<\/em> music.<\/p>\n<p>Frequently performed in restaurants, fado is a Lisbon-born folk music that pairs expressive singing with guitar noodling. Classical singers conjure up saudade as they sing about Lisbon\u2019s seafaring past and the harsh, but rewarding realities of everyday life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/portugal\/highlights-portugal-160218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SEE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF PORTUGAL ON THIS 8-DAY SMALL GROUP ADVENTURE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But if traditional tunes aren\u2019t your thing, there\u2019s contemporary music around Lisbon too.<\/p>\n<p>Head the city\u2019s <em>miradouros, <\/em>or viewpoints, where both locals and tourists hang out. Here, you\u2019ll often catch buskers serenading the crowd and the sunset. It\u2019s a great view paired with a great soundtrack \u2013 just make you sure you tip the musicians to say <em>obrigada<\/em> (thanks!).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Venture to the Ch\u00e3o do Loureiro\u00a0carpark to find every floor decorated by a different street artist.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to look down on your artistic adventure too. Key pedestrian pavements feature <em>calcada portuguesa<\/em>, or black-and-white mosaics that are painstakingly laid by hand.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Photo by S-F.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lisbon is nicknamed the \u2018City of Seven Hills\u2019 for good reason, and I love how the locals have taken this in their stride.<\/p>\n<p>There are all types of transport to conquer the climb here, with six canary-yellow tram routes, three dainty funiculars, a flight of outdoor escalators, and one lacy Santa Justa Lift (designed by a student of Mr Eiffel Tower).<\/p>\n<p>The city also has hundreds of zippy, green electric scooters for rent, which are perfect for when your feet are aching\u2026 or you\u2019ve had a few too many past\u00e9is de nata.<\/p>\n<p>A word of advice: The well-known 28 tram stops at major landmarks, but if you\u2019d rather avoid feeling like a sardine squished into a tin (a remarkably apt description for Lisbon \u00ad\u2013 they\u2019re obsessed with canned fish!) you can explore one of the other equally scenic lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/portugal-europe-food-destination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: YOU SHOULD GO TO PORTUGAL JUST FOR THE FOOD. It\u2019s a labyrinth-like neighbourhood that spills down the hillside under Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge, and was one of the only areas to survive the 1755 earthquake that redefined the city.<\/p>\n<p>The older residents, many of whom have lived in Alfama all their lives, grew up viewing the footpaths as extensions of their homes. Neighbours would rest, eat, chat, shave, brush their teeth \u2013 you name it \u2013 out on the cobblestones together.<\/p>\n<p>Contemporary culture has chipped away at this tradition, but you can still catch locals hanging washing out their windows, enjoying dinner on the street, or yelling a conversation to someone passing below. I even spotted a lady singing out her window, and the tune still sticks with me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lisbon will capture your heart.
