Be Intrepid\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/53bknMQEvtM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019ll be tied to a rope and the doctor will be standing there with a defibrillator,\u201d the guide says, soothingly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d says Mandi, now thoroughly terrified. \u201cGreat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandi is from Texas, and this is her first trip to <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/antarctica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antarctica<\/a>. In fact it\u2019s her first time on anything bigger than a canoe \u2013 turns out they don\u2019t get many <a href=\"\/boats-ships#2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">137-metre polar cruise ships<\/a> in the Lone Star State. It\u2019s more a \u2018sunshine-and-Stetsons\u2019 kind of place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea of going to Antarctica was just outrageous,\u201d Mandi says. \u201cI\u2019ve never been on a ship. I\u2019ve never even been out to sea. I started panicking a bit, you know. What if I\u2019m afraid on the boat? What if I get seasick? I had no idea what to expect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandi isn\u2019t alone. Most first-time visitors have only a vague, Attenborough-ish mental image of Antarctica, fuelled by nature documentaries and glossy tour brochures (<a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/antarctica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guilty as charged<\/a>). Possibly penguins might be involved. Bobbing icebergs\u2026 snow. That kind of thing. Mandi is one of about 50,000 travellers who visit the <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/antarctica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antarctic Peninsula<\/a> every year, drawn by some deep, unshakable feeling that this might be the last place on Earth where you can experience a proper adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came on this trip by myself,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople said, &#8216;you\u2019re going on vacation by yourself, that\u2019s weird&#8217;. But it hasn\u2019t felt like I\u2019ve gone by myself at all. I\u2019ve made lots of friends. This whole trip, I\u2019ve been completely engrossed in the lectures and talking to the scientists and all the people on board, but I think it\u2019s the animals that are making me lose my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Peregrine-Adventures-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A3541-1-1-e1563756387244.jpg\" alt=\"A group of penguins in Antarctica\" class=\"wp-image-37325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Peregrine-Adventures-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A3541-1-1-e1563756387244.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Peregrine-Adventures-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A3541-1-1-e1563756387244-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The variety and abundance of life in Antarctica does take people by surprise. Despite being the highest, driest and most remote continent on the planet, Antarctica is home to over 235 marine species, 100 million nesting birds (mostly albatross, petrels, skuas and terns), migrating whales, elephant seals, leopard seals and Weddell seals, red blooms of polar krill, regal king penguins and toy-like Ad\u00e9lie penguins, waddling in squadrons across the ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first time I saw a whale was when I was sitting down to dinner,\u201d Mandi says. \u201cJust there he was, out the window.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing that\u2019s making Mandi nervous isn\u2019t the wildlife, although she admits it\u2019s been hard to contain her enthusiasm at times. (\u201cWhen I experience extreme joy and pleasure, it becomes part of the public record. I\u2019ve been learning as I get older that I don\u2019t have to say everything I think and feel, but yeah, it\u2019s a process. It consists of changing into bathers \u2013 you remembered to pack a bikini for your Antarctic holiday, right? \u2013 lassoing a stout rope around your waist, then leaping into the inky, freezing water. You\u2019re not allowed to dip your toe or gingerly acclimatise inch-by-inch, either. This is all or nothing. A leap of faith. Think of it like skydiving from an altitude of three feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antarctic waters, as you might imagine, are unpleasant for land mammals. Temperatures range from 2\u00b0C to a blood-curdling -0.8\u00b0C, but when you\u2019re paddling over a thousand feet of sub-zero blackness, home to leopard seals, orca and other many-eyed terrors of the deep, the difference feels pretty academic.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A2631.jpg\" alt=\"A woman in a red jacket smiling at the camera with the ocean behind her\" class=\"wp-image-37319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A2631.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A2631-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A2631-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Intrepid-Travel-Antarctica_2020_21_INT_HR_049A2631-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy friends know how much I love the heat and the sun,\u201d Mandi says, ahead of the big day, \u201cso the idea that I would jump into the Antarctic waters is ridiculous&nbsp;\u2013 like seriously ridiculous. It\u2019s not me. I\u2019m a definite maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the ship drops anchor. It\u2019s plunge time. Travellers hurry back to their cabins to change, emerging a few minutes later in bathers and nervous smiles. Everyone\u2019s arm hair is already standing on end. The water is perfectly flat and dark, like liquid mercury. A platoon of medical staff is standing by with cocoa, blankets and defibrillators.
