We are hiking around the foothills of the Nuratau Mountains in the tiny border village of Hayat in <a href=\"\/uzbekistan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uzbekistan<\/a>. He is casually standing in his yard, soaking up the last rays of sunshine before the sun begins to set, and I wave at him from a distance in greeting. The photographer in me wants to capture his regal purple attire against the fiery red colours of autumn. I respond that yes, I am in fact Nigerian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me your real name. Because I know it has a meaning. African names always have deep meanings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides being visibly blown away by his statement, that simple interaction with Hushbek &#8211; a stranger &#8211; not only touched me deeply, but also continues to frame the way I interact with and acknowledge strangers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/uzbekistan\/uzbekistan-adventure-160796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SEE THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY FOR YOURSELF ON OUR 9-DAY UZBEKISTAN ADVENTURE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For me, the most interesting part of my travels are the people I meet along the way. People who graciously open themselves, their cultures, and their lifestyles up to me so I can continually broaden my horizons and knowledge about this fascinating world we share.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The art of connecting with strangers. Be Intrepid.\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aN2gGmFZg68?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And as a professional photographer who especially enjoys environmental portraits of people that communicate a sense of place and feeling, interacting with strangers comes with the job.<\/p>\n<p>Approaching someone going about their daily business and asking them for a portrait can be very challenging on many levels for several reasons. Often, the subconscious reason why we\u2019re afraid of photographing others is our innate deep-seated fear of rejection. But, the moment you ask someone for a photo, the interaction no longer becomes about what you want and now becomes about what they are willing to give you of themselves.<\/p>\n<p>With this transfer of power in mind, here are some of my reflections from my travels; how I was able to connect with the locals and create some memorable portraits during my time exploring Uzbekistan through its food, traditions, and lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/top-5-places-to-visit-in-uzbekistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>READ MORE: THE TOP 5 PLACES TO VISIT IN UZBEKISTAN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Proper acknowledgement is the foundation of every exchange<\/h3>\n<p>We all want to be seen and acknowledged, no matter who we are. This is a very intrinsic human need.<\/p>\n<p>Even the simple wave of greeting \u2013 which was the icebreaker between Hushbek and I \u2013 can be enough as a way of saying \u201c<em>I see and acknowledge you<\/em>\u201d. I immediately walked up to her, greeted and introduced myself, and asked for her name in return \u2013 Kamilla. All through gestures with no common language spoken.<\/p>\n<h3>Show people that you appreciate what is important to them<\/h3>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a fishmonger laying out fish for sale in a market, an artisan crafting something intricate and delicate, or even someone with a pet, this means paying attention to their work and showing that you value their time, respect their craft, and appreciate what is important to them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34402\" style=\"width: 568px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34402\" class=\"wp-image-34402 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Bukhara-Uzbekistan-Lola-Akinmade-Akerstrom-113-1.jpg\" alt=\"Uzbek woman holding traditional bread.\" width=\"558\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Bukhara-Uzbekistan-Lola-Akinmade-Akerstrom-113-1.jpg 558w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Bukhara-Uzbekistan-Lola-Akinmade-Akerstrom-113-1-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The freshest bread you will ever taste.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While chasing morning light around the streets of Bukhara, I ran into a group of women \u2013 bakers \u2013 who were setting up their breakfast stalls for the morning. I knew I wanted to photograph them and their warm earth-toned attires, so I approached them right away and asked them questions and tasted the bread they were selling. While my camera was slung by my side, it wasn\u2019t the focus of our interaction until I had spent a few minutes with them and they were relaxed enough to grant me some photos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/what-to-expect-travel-uzbekistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>READ MORE: THE BEAUTY OF TRAVELLING TO UZBEKISTAN, EVEN THOUGH I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Genuinely compliment someone if they catch your eye<\/h3>\n<p>I only compliment people when I truly mean it. So, I approached and complimented her, only to find out she was a new bride and that was why she was dressed up that way, even though she was working on household chores.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/why-visit-uzbekistan-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: 4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT UZBEKISTAN NOW<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Be open to learning about them and their lives<\/h3>\n<p>One of the best traits a traveller can have is openness when exploring the world and being curious about similarities, differences, and what connects us such as love, family, and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Upon meeting shepherd Misha who was out herding his flock one morning, I knew I wanted to get a portrait of him. So, I walked up, introduced myself, asked for his name and if he was willing to let me take a photo.
