This is the part Zohra likes to wake up for, as she\u2019s reminded how small her village is in the scale of the enormous, incredible world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 16-year-old walks into her family\u2019s home and the air is familiar with her mother\u2019s cooking. She drops her bags, but the scene is different: her family is waiting together for her <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all together <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in one room. They\u2019ve been waiting all week for this moment, her regular weekend return from school, so they can ask for her opinion on an important family matter. It\u2019s a community matter really, because the whole village feels like family. She glows with pride, thinking of everything it took to get to this point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-title single-post-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/adventures\/what-you-need-to-know-about-travelling-in-egypt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: IMPROVING ANIMAL WELFARE IN EGYPT, ONE FURRY PATIENT AT A TIME<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her name Zohra means \u2018flower blossom,\u2019 a perfect choice at a time when girls in her village were expected to be delicate, demure, and something more ornamental than functional in the home. When she was born, only a few women in the area could read; even fewer finished their education. Getting to school now took her over an hour. That is when she <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> go; Zohra\u2019s parents made her stay home to help her mother more often as she got older. She dreamed of this place, where girls had stacks of books and computers, ate three warm meals a day, and never had to skip class for chores. It was not long before Education For All had an open spot for Zohra, and she took that first bus ride, the Atlas Mountains shrinking in the window behind her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theintrepidfoundation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE INTREPID FOUNDATION HERE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education For All\u2019s boarding houses allow girls in rural Morocco to live in a safe, supportive place as they continue their education. Each one is managed by a local Berber woman \u2013 called a \u2018house mother\u2019 \u2013 who looks after the girls\u2019 wellbeing during the week. On the weekends, the girls have transportation back home to be sure they stay connected with their families. Sonia Omar, who manages fundraising and communications for EFA, makes it clear that they don\u2019t want to interfere with the girls\u2019 cultures. \u201cWe just want to give them access to things they wouldn\u2019t have otherwise.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That access opens them up to opportunities, personal and professional, otherwise unimaginable in their home villages. When Khadija started with EFA, the once far-fetched dream of completing her studies finally appeared on the horizon. A standout student, humble as she is, and incredibly curious about the world, it was clear she would graduate. But when she accepted an internship at Intrepid Group\u2019s PEAK DMC office in Marrakech, the realm of possibilities became bigger than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-title single-post-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/zina-intrepid-travel-morocco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: MEET ZINA, THE INTREPID GENERAL MANAGER FIGHTING FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN MOROCCO<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work was overwhelming at first, she admits. \u201cBut everyone kept telling me \u2018You can do this. You just need the time to learn, then you can do anything we\u2019re doing.\u2019\u201d Before she knew it, Khadija was leading a cooking class for travellers keen to perfect a Moroccan <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tajine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in just a short while, she\u2019ll be teaching biology to students of her own. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/The-Intrepid-Foundation-Morocco_EFA_Ouirgane-114-e1554785701559.jpg\" alt=\"Two girls laughing together at school\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/The-Intrepid-Foundation-Morocco_EFA_Ouirgane-114-e1554785701559.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/The-Intrepid-Foundation-Morocco_EFA_Ouirgane-114-e1554785701559-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/The-Intrepid-Foundation-Morocco_EFA_Ouirgane-114-e1554785701559-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/The-Intrepid-Foundation-Morocco_EFA_Ouirgane-114-e1554785701559-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>All of EFA\u2019s girls hail from the High Atlas region, where the Amazigh <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more commonly known as Berber<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> culture and language is well-preserved. Berbers are the indigenous people of Morocco, and their dialects and traditions survived the conquests that brought Arabic to much of the region. Today, school curriculums are taught in Arabic, adding an additional barrier to education for children with Berber as their first language. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they\u2019re able to find a piece of home <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and powerful role models <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the boarding houses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Intrepid Foundation supported EFA\u2019s programs with a donation of AU $154,000 in 2018, allowing them provide an entire year of education for over 90 girls in three boarding \u00a0houses. Each house is managed and staffed entirely by local Berber women: one house mother, one chef, and one housecleaner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as much as the women do for the girls, sometimes they are students in their own right<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-title single-post-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/playground-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: FROM LANDFILL TO JUNGLE GYM: THE AMAZING STORY OF AN UPCYCLED PLAYGROUND<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Education For All recruited Latifa as the first-ever house mother, she accepted hesitantly. Latifa received her university education in Marrakech, but feared her timid, softly-spoken nature would make looking after a group of ten difficult. Today, she is the head house mother for over 200 girls: managing staff, coordinating operations, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most recently <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flawlessly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hosting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their visit to Morocco<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although every girl in the house looks up to Latifa, she looks to them to teach <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about other cultures, people, and different worldviews. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few years ago, Khaoula was one of those girls looking up to Latifa. Now, as EFA\u2019s newest house mother, it\u2019s her turn to be a role model for the next cohort of students. When Education For All began in 2007, staff were all but pleading parents to let their daughters finish their education. But now, demand is so high that girls must attend an annual \u2018Selection Day\u2019 to vie for a coveted spot in the boarding houses. \u201cIt\u2019s a hard thing to do,\u201d Sonia explains, \u201cbut we can see how much we\u2019ve shifted ideas about the role of women in the community.\u201d Whether it\u2019s allowing young girls like Khaoula to continue their schooling, or valuing their opinions like Zohra\u2019s family did, the changes are becoming clearer each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, Education For All is opening a brand-new boarding house for sixty girls aged 16 to 18. Located near a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lyc\u00e9e<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the house will help them get \u2018university ready\u2019 by focusing on life skills and academic support for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baccalaureate. While it will make room for new students in the other houses, the current demand is over three times the available spots. And as support for girls\u2019 education continues to grow, so will the demand.
