We love travelling and we love words, so imagine our surprise when we came across a massive treasure trove of travel words that describe how we feel before, during and after we travel better than anything we\u2019ve ever seen, ever. In the history of everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n

These literary gems make \u2018wanderlust\u2019 look like an overrated show pony. Which it is. Travel brochures of the future will be littered with the likes of resfeber, eudaimonia and fernweh. At least, they will if we have anything to do with it.<\/p>\n

Something lovely discovered by chance, like stumbling on a waterfall in Costa Rica<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lit. \u201cdrift\u201d; a spontaneous journey where the traveller leaves their life behind for a time to let the spirit of the landscape and architecture attract and move them.<\/p>\n

3. Numinous (adj.)<\/h3>\n

Origin: Latin<\/p>\n

Describing an experience that makes you fearful yet fascinated, awed yet attracted; the powerful, personal feeling of being overwhelmed and inspired. For example, you may have a numinous experience at Yosemite National Park<\/a>, gazing up in wonder at El Capitan, or at a towering black bear.<\/p>\n

4. Cockaigne (n.)<\/h3>\n

Origin: French, medieval trope<\/p>\n

An imaginary land of luxury and idleness. Think House Tyrell of Highgarden, minus the poisoning.<\/p>\n

5. Schwellenangst (n.)<\/h3>\n

Origin: German<\/p>\n

Fear of embarking on something new; fear of crossing a threshold. But you know what? You should totally just go with it, and cross that threshold.<\/p>\n

7. Resfeber (n.)<\/h3>\n

Origin: Swedish<\/p>\n

The restless race of the traveller\u2019s heart before the journey begins when anxiety and anticipation are tangled together; a \u2018travel fever\u2019 that can manifest as an illness. The only cure is another grand adventure.<\/p>\n

8. Vagary (n.)<\/h3>\n

Origin: Latin<\/p>\n

An unpredictable instance, a wandering journey; a whimsical, wild or unusual idea, desire, or action.<\/p>\n

Origin: Latin<\/p>\n

Moving or happening in every direction instantaneously. It\u2019s a little like when you think your passport\u2019s in your sock drawer but it\u2019s not and your flight\u2019s leaving in three hours.<\/p>\n

11. Novaturient (adj.)<\/h3>\n

Origin: Latin<\/p>\n

Desiring or seeking powerful change in one\u2019s life, behaviour, or situation.<\/p>\n

A fear or dislike of one\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

An intense and irresistible desire for freedom. Pretty much describes every picture of the Greek Islands<\/a>\u00a0we\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n
