{"id":28923,"date":"2018-09-03T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures?p=28923&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=28923"},"modified":"2024-09-18T16:11:58","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T06:11:58","slug":"traditional-japanese-ryokan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/traditional-japanese-ryokan\/","title":{"rendered":"What to expect in a traditional Japanese ryokan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I booked a spot on Intrepid\u2019s <a href=\"\/trips\/CJKJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12-day Classic Japan<\/a> comfort trip for that all-important word: comfort.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve done my time camping and bunking down in hostels, but I\u2019m too old for that now.\u00a0 The idea of comfortable hotels, air conditioning (August can be very hot in Japan) and a nice breakfast sounded exactly like the trip I wanted. Attached bathrooms\/toilets will usually be very small, and many ryokans will have additional shared bathing facilities with certain hours. Your trip leader will explain etiquette involved in using the shared facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post-title single-post-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/etiquette-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ETIQUETTE IN JAPAN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sleeping on the floor? Shared facilities?\u00a0 This sounded a lot like camping to me.\u00a0 But the itinerary was perfect, so I took the plunge, and made the booking.<\/p>\n<p>Intrepid\u2019s Classic Japan adventure actually had two ryokan stays on its itinerary: one in the mountain town of Koya-san in a Buddhist temple inn, and one in the Tsumago area.<\/p>\n<p>It took four trains, a funicular railway, and a bus to get <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from Kyoto to Koya-san<\/a>, so we arrived hot and slightly travel weary. But what a beautiful place.\u00a0 We were welcomed by a monk who spoke good English and he explained how things worked; there would be communal meals in the dining room, set times to use <a href=\"\/adventures\/japan-onsen-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the onsen<\/a> (shared bathing facilities, using water from a hot spring that are very popular in Japan), curfew was 9pm and everyone was expected to attend the morning services at 6.30am the next morning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EXPLORE JAPAN NOW ON A SMALL GROUP ADVENTURE WITH INTREPID<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29014\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29014\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29014\" src=\"\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/shutterstock_1086899510-1.jpg\" alt=\"Two beds on the floor in a ryokan\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/shutterstock_1086899510-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/shutterstock_1086899510-1-425x284.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/shutterstock_1086899510-1-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/shutterstock_1086899510-1-585x390.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Surachet Jo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We spent the afternoon exploring the stunning town of Koya-san, and returned to the temple for dinner.\u00a0 And what a meal; it was possibly the most visually stunning meal I have ever had.\u00a0 Consisting of two trays containing small portions of about 14 or so different dishes and accompaniments.\u00a0 All vegetarian, of course, but everything was delicious (and the sake was very nice too).\u00a0 While we ate, our rooms were made up for bed.\u00a0 Two futon mattresses were rolled out on the floor with doonas and small pillows, and a small fan was placed in the corner to keep us cool during the night.\u00a0 The mattress was comfortable enough (but the pillow was a bit lumpy).<\/p>\n<p class=\"post-title single-post-title\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/japan-food-tour-what-to-expect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: WHAT TO EXPECT ON A REAL FOOD ADVENTURE AROUND JAPAN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The morning service consisted of devotions in two different areas of the temple, and I felt very privileged to be allowed to watch.\u00a0 The second part \u2013 the fire ceremony \u2013 was quite dramatic, with the head priest building a tower of small pieces of wood, pouring oil on it and setting it alight, all while being accompanied by a young monk on a drum, chanting throughout.\u00a0 It was mesmerising.<\/p>\n<p>So. One ryokan down, one to go.\u00a0 With a couple of comfortable nights at a hotel in Hiroshima in between, I was ready to tackle our next sleeping adventure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29012\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29012\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29012\" src=\"\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Intrepid-Travel-Japan-Hiroshima-ryokan-dinner-table-01.jpg\" alt=\"A meal in a Japanese ryokan\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Intrepid-Travel-Japan-Hiroshima-ryokan-dinner-table-01.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Intrepid-Travel-Japan-Hiroshima-ryokan-dinner-table-01-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Intrepid-Travel-Japan-Hiroshima-ryokan-dinner-table-01-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Intrepid-Travel-Japan-Hiroshima-ryokan-dinner-table-01-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Brook Sabin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ryokan near the historic town of Tsumago was family run, and I spotted at least three generations involved in its running.\u00a0 The room set up was very similar to the temple inn, with shared toilets and shower facilities available in various places, as well as an onsen (if getting naked in company is your thing).\u00a0 The air conditioning was a very nice surprise.\u00a0 Again, we were treated to a beautiful meal in a communal dining hall, and by the time we finished, our rooms were made up for the night.\u00a0 Sleep came easier this night, but I think this had more to do with the AC than anything else.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/subscribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUBSCRIBE TO INTREPID\u2019S NEWSLETTER FOR TRAVEL TIPS, COMPETITIONS, GIVEAWAYS &amp; MORE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t changed my mind about being too old for camping, but both of these stays were highlights of the trip.\u00a0 It offered a glimpse into ancient practices, mixed with great hospitality, amazing food and a chance to meet Japanese people where they live and work.\u00a0 The bathroom facilities were clean, well equipped and surprisingly modern, the beds comfortable enough for a few nights, and the surroundings were well worth that tiny bit of discomfort to have the chance to explore.
