{"id":25750,"date":"2018-03-08T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T21:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures?p=25750&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=25750"},"modified":"2025-03-25T01:13:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T14:13:06","slug":"tracking-rhinos-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/tracking-rhinos-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"Tracking rhinos on foot in Uganda: one Intrepid traveller shares his story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u201cFollow my instructions at all times,\u201d stated Robert Tumusiime, my guide at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in <a href=\"\/uganda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda<\/a>, as we left our vehicle and headed into the African bush on foot.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to recent rains, a proliferation of tall grasses populated the flat terrain, and colourful birds \u2013 flycatchers, rollers, bee-eaters, orioles \u2013 chattered and danced from tree to tree around us.\u00a0 Apart from that it was wonderfully silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t be easy to see rhinos amongst all the vegetation,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t worry, they are there,\u201d replied a smiling Robert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s precisely what I\u2019m worried about!\u201d I thought to myself.<\/p>\n<p>With 24-hour monitoring by a team of trained and committed rangers, Robert and the team knew exactly where the rhinos were feeding that day, and they manoeuvred us to closer to our quarry.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly there they were.\u00a0 And running in our direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep calm,\u201d said Robert, as we hid in a dense thicket, \u201cthey are just playing with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7557-Robert-1.jpg\" alt=\"Guide Robert and a rhinoceros\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7557-Robert-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7557-Robert-1-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7557-Robert-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7557-Robert-1-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/> Amazingly, we had encountered a large gathering of six or seven rhinos \u2013 adult females and their young \u2013 with two one-tonne youngsters jousting in a mock fight barely 20 metres from our bushy refuge.\u00a0 Full of adrenaline, I had to take a deep breath to compose myself and be mindful of this close encounter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/uganda\/gorillas-game-parks-159964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>COME FACE-TO-FACE WITH A RHINO ON OUR 21-DAY GORILLAS &amp; CHIMPS IN DEPTH ADVENTURE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I doubt I have enough adjectives to describe the experience of walking in the <a href=\"\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil=\"url\">African bush<\/a> alongside wild rhinos.\u00a0 Wow, was all I could think.\u00a0 On a regular safari, tourists are, to a certain extent, insulated from the wildness by their vehicles and the sound and smells of engines.\u00a0 This was very different. Being so close to such enormous, armour-plated wild animals, protected only by the trust I had in my guide, his understanding of rhino behaviour, and a few small trees and shrubs, was an exhilarating experience to say the least.\u00a0 It\u2019s a full-on sensory experience.\u00a0 Given their bulk (adult white rhinos can weigh three tonnes), rhinos are surprisingly quiet; yet at close quarters you can hear them breathe and grunt, coupled with the rhythmic sound of their grazing, and even the smell of the earth disturbed beneath their feet.\u00a0 Visually, you can appreciate the rugged texture of their skin, their huge toe-nails, their wiry eyelashes&#8230;\u00a0 And all to the beat of my over-active heart!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A8008-1-e1520391571311.jpg\" alt=\"A young rhino and his mother\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A8008-1-e1520391571311.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A8008-1-e1520391571311-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A8008-1-e1520391571311-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A8008-1-e1520391571311-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>Later I was lucky enough to see both of the sanctuary\u2019s newborn calves, Apache and Madam, with their mothers.\u00a0 Far from being aggressive or over-protective, their mothers were calm and allowed me and my guide to observe them from a respectful distance.\u00a0 They were remarkably gentle, though like all toddlers the youngsters were inquisitive \u2013 playing in the mud, nibbling newly discovered plants, and gambolling around like spring lambs \u2013 before suckling from their mothers and having a nap in the shade once the equatorial sun got too hot.\u00a0 I felt privileged to witness these moments of tenderness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/in-focus-farm-to-feast-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0HOW A LOCAL GROUP IS FIGHTING POVERTY IN KENYA, ONE PIG AT A TIME<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But how is all this even possible?\u00a0 It\u2019s part of a unique project to reintroduce wild rhinos to Uganda, led by non-profit organisation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinofund.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhino Fund Uganda<\/a>.\u00a0 Historically, both white and black rhinos could be found living in the country, but rampant poaching during Uganda\u2019s post-independence conflicts was devastating for wildlife, and wild rhinos were declared extinct in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2005\/6, following decades of peace and stability, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhinofund.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhino Fund Uganda<\/a> facilitated the release of six adult southern white rhinos \u2013 four trans-located from Kenya and two from Disney Animal Kingdom in the USA \u2013 onto a 7,000 hectare ranch in Nakasongola district (180 kilometres north of Kampala).\u00a0 Nature took its natural course, and the first successful birth occurred in June 2009 \u2013 a male with joint Kenyan and American heritage.\u00a0 Naturally they called him Obama!\u00a0 Since then, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has gone from strength to strength, and the current population stands at 21 southern white rhinos, with two babies born in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7566-1.jpg\" alt=\"Two rhinos grazing in Uganda\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7566-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7566-1-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7566-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2H3A7566-1-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>Tourism plays a major role in this innovative conservation initiative, with an active rhino trekking program, an on-site lodge, and opportunities for other wildlife encounters including atmospheric night walks where elusive leopards, aardvarks and pangolins may be seen. The income generated from these activities ensures that the Rhino Fund have the resources needed to manage the sanctuary, undertake community projects and, ultimately, protect the rhinos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/adventures\/wildebeest-migration-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED: EAST AFRICA&#8217;S WILDEBEEST MIGRATION &#8211; EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like everywhere as far as rhino conservation is concerned, the main threat to Ziwa is poaching.\u00a0 In Africa in the last decade, an estimated 7245 rhinos have been poached for their horns, which are illegally exported to Asia for use in traditional medicine.\u00a0 As a result, there are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savetherhino.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only around 20,000 white and just 5,000 black rhinos<\/a> left in the wild in the whole of the African continent.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, we can collectively do something about this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way to support rhino conservation in Uganda is by visiting the sanctuary,\u201d explains Rhino Fund Uganda\u2019s passionate Executive Director Angie Genade. \u201cYou can also adopt a rhino, name a rhino or make a donation.
