Strolling through narrow, cobbled streets, ones you&#8217;ve been dreaming of for months. Tucking in to a feast for dinner, fish so fresh it would&#8217;ve been caught that day&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Europe&#8217;s islands offer all that, and so much more. There&#8217;s nothing\u00a0we love more than the small towns, coastal views, and endless scenic vistas they boast. Unfortunately, that&#8217;s a pretty popular opinion of ours. And if you share it, you might want to read on. To ensure you can explore away from the summer crowds, we&#8217;re shining a light on some of the continent&#8217;s more overlooked island destinations.<\/p>\n<p>You won&#8217;t find Croatia&#8217;s Hvar here. Neither will you find Greece&#8217;s Corfu or Italy&#8217;s Sardinia. But what you will find are a selection of stunning islands, worthy of acclaim, and just waiting to be discovered&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Syros, Greece<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Syros-e1490023002406.jpg\" alt=\"Syros isand, Greece\" width=\"800\" height=\"454\" \/>Mykonos and Santorini are gorgeous \u2013 we\u2019re certainly not denying that. But hit them up in July or August and you\u2019ll find out just how many people are intent on exploring their <a href=\"\/greece\">Greek island<\/a> charms. Arrive at Syros, however, and you\u2019ll feel hearteningly like a local, probably because you\u2019ll be surrounded by them. This island is relatively rural, fairly traditional, and, accordingly, is full of whitewashed houses, farms, ancient ruins, and super cute villages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our recommendation:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/greece\/athens-santorini-100879\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"\/greece\/athens-santorini-160037\">Explore Syros on Intrepid\u2019s 8-day \u2018Athens to Santorini\u2019 trip.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ll be at a loss for things to do here. It&#8217;s far, far away \u2013\u00a0both physically and culturally. The mountainous Mediterranean island is as diverse as it is underrated, a wonderland filled with charming coastal towns, beaches, forests and an identity quite unlike that found on the mainland. Full of picturesque streets and historic buildings, it really is Europe at its finest. So hot right now \u2013\u00a0and not just because the islands are a\u00a0newly-crowned party hostpot, but\u00a0also thanks to Dubrovnik\u2019s role as casual\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones<\/em> filming location. There\u2019s almost too much to boast about in the Balkan gem that\u2019s filled with coastal cities, historic old towns, and intimidating amounts of super fresh\u00a0seafood, but this summer the up-and-coming destination to check out is\u00a0Kor\u010dula. It takes three or four hours to get there from scenic Dubrovnik, but it\u2019s well worth the trip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our recommendation:\u00a0<a href=\"\/croatia\/explore-croatia-160038\">Explore\u00a0Kor\u010dula Island on Intrepid\u2019s 8-day \u2018Explore Croatia\u2019 trip.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the sixth largest island in Croatia, but considering this, it just feels so\u00a0old-school and removed from the crowds. And by this we mean that the\u00a0small villages and tiny beaches aplenty are ripe for discovery. The wine is also something to watch \u2013\u00a0those dry whites won\u2019t drink themselves. It&#8217;s one of those rare gems that really is untainted by mass tourism, and its pastel-hued houses won&#8217;t fail to lift your spirits. Two spots you can&#8217;t leave without visiting are the walled medieval town of Terra Murata and the charming port of Corricella. There aren&#8217;t too many &#8216;attractions&#8217; per se, but that really is part of the charm. Whether you come for a day trip or as the starting point on our week-long <strong><a href=\"\/italy\/amalfi-coast-sailing-adventure-162488\">Amalfi sailing trip<\/a><\/strong>, it&#8217;s a beautiful island that&#8217;s worth a visit. Formerly part of the Soviet Union, the small country has a lot to offer the intrepid traveler: a charmingly historic capital city (Tallinn), a ton of forests and lakes, and last but not least, over 1,500 islands. Of these islands, its\u00a0Saaremaa that is the biggest, and perhaps\u00a0the best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our recommendation: <a href=\"\/estonia\/classic-baltics-160608\">Check out Saaremaa (and so much more) on this 11-day adventure through Northern Poland and the Baltics.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visiting this island is a little bit like traveling back in time. During the Soviet era it was off-limit to visitors (and even Estonians needed a permit to go there), meaning that it&#8217;s quite the rural, peaceful spot. Filled with greenery, small lighthouses and windmills, and an assortment of tiny villages, it&#8217;s both cute and genuinely interesting (\u00a0don&#8217;t miss the Kaali meteorite crater field!).
