Every year, thousands of travelers explore the narrow streets of Barcelona\u2019s Gothic Quarter or view some of Goya\u2019s masterpieces at Madrid&#8217;s Prado Museum. But Spain is far more than just sangria, tapas and the works of Gaud\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve come up with six of the country\u2019s unheralded towns and cities that are definitely worth a detour.<\/p>\n<h2>Bilbao<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Bilbao-e1497219363629.jpg\" alt=\"Bilbao Spain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/>With beautiful San Sebastian and the historic town of Guernica just a short drive away, the Basque Country\u2019s biggest city doesn\u2019t feature on many people\u2019s to-visit lists. But in recent years, the former industrial town has really found its feet. From just 25,000 tourists 20 years ago, Bilbao now boasts over a million visitors a year. Much of this can be attributed to the city\u2019s ambitious urban regeneration project, which has transformed the city into a regional hub of art and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Bilbao\u2019s biggest draw is undoubtedly the Frank Gehry designed Guggenheim Museum, which features a wide selection of contemporary art. Another sight of interest includes the <em>Museo de Bellas Artes<\/em>, which features works from Picasso, Gauguin and Goya. For the less artistically inclined, try a stroll through the city\u2019s compact Old Town and sample some of the many <em>pintxos<\/em>, the Basque country\u2019s unbeatable bite size tapas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"\/spain\">THIS 10-DAY ADVENTURE IN SPAIN STARTS IN BEAUTIFUL BILBAO<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Girona<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Girona-e1497219383773.jpg\" alt=\"Girona Spain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/>Situated just an hour\u2019s drive from Barcelona, this pleasant Catalan town is considered one of the best places in Spain for quality of life. And it isn\u2019t hard to see why. Some of its many sights include its impressive cathedral, picturesque winding streets and Medieval and Roman walls, which offer a great vantage point over the city.<\/p>\n<p>Fans of Modernist architecture can also check out the works of local boy Rafael Mas\u00f3, who designed several buildings in the city. French engineer Gustave Eiffel (of Tower fame) also constructed the bright red <em>Pont de Ferro<\/em> (Steel Bridge, often known in English as Eiffel\u2019s Bridge) that crosses the Ter River.<\/p>\n<p>Unusually for a provincial town, Girona also has decent nightlife, with venues such as <em>Lux<\/em> and <em>Yeah! Indie Club<\/em> blasting out tunes until the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"\/spain\" data-wpil=\"url\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17651\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/spain-trip.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Salamanca<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca.jpg\" alt=\"Salamanca Spain\" width=\"1254\" height=\"836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca.jpg 1254w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca-425x283.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca-1170x780.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Salamanca-585x390.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1254px) 100vw, 1254px\" \/>Perhaps due to its remoteness, (the city is closer to the Portuguese border than it is to Madrid, the nearest major city) Salamanca doesn\u2019t get the love it deserves. This is a real shame, because Spain\u2019s most magnificent university town deserves a place on every visitor\u2019s to-do list. We suggest you start with a <em>caf\u00e9 con leche<\/em> in the <em>Plaza Mayor<\/em>, before taking a look at the town\u2019s two impressive cathedrals and the <em>Casa de las Conchas<\/em>, a renaissance palace decorated with shells.<\/p>\n<p>Salamanca also has an impressive art scene, with the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum boasting over 2500 pieces including a Faberge egg. But even London\u2019s 23 inches of rain a year pales in comparison with the 75 inches that Santiago receives.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t let that put you off. Anyone willing to brave the ever present downpours will find a captivating town with a wide range of attractions. Make sure to check out the Romanesque Cathedral that is purported to hold the remains of Saint James. Then take a stroll through the UNESCO listed old town, with its granite buildings and arched walkways.<\/p>\n<p>A trip to the market is also a must, where you can find everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to live crabs. Just outside the city is the breathtaking<em> Caldera de Bandama, <\/em>the remains of an extinct volcano and <em>Roque Nublo<\/em>, an 80 meter volcanic rock.
