But there&#8217;s one destination that slips under the radar but consistently stuns, and its name is\u00a0M\u00e9rida.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many Mexicans agree on\u00a0M\u00e9rida\u00a0being one of the most beautiful cities in the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also one of the safest in the country, highly cultural, artsy and only 20 miles away from the beach. There&#8217;s plenty of reasons to plan a visit.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, having met many travelers unsure of what to do in M\u00e9rida and having lived there a while, I thought it warranted a little guide. So\u00a0allow me to introduce you to the real city,\u00a0the nearby attractions, and, of course, how to eat and drink like a local.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Art, culture and history<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With its varied past, <a href=\"\/mexico\">M\u00e9rida<\/a> boasts rich culture, history, art and traditions. Enjoying the city to the fullest means getting to discover and fall for them all. In order to do this upon arrival, walk through the city&#8217;s downtown buildings \u2013 an attraction in their own right. Painted in bright shades of pink, blue, red, yellow and purple, they leave you transported back to the city&#8217;s colorful historic times with a simple stroll.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20095 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Merida-3-e1494961469123.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Walk around a little more and you&#8217;ll see various attractions \u2013\u00a0from the lavish, pink buildings on Main Square, to the Cathedral, to government buildings to an abundance of parks.\u00a0My favorite building,\u00a0<em>Palacio del Gobierno<\/em> \u2013 the green one on the corner across from the Cathedral \u2013 shows unique, gorgeous frescoes that recount the history of the Peninsula, the Spaniards&#8217; arrival, Mayan massacres, rebellions, local heroes and more.<\/p>\n<p>More of an art lover? The Museum of Modern Art, located next door to\u00a0the Cathedral, is set around a lush courtyard and regularly shows exhibitions by Yucatan artists who promote local traditions and the beauty of their region. Small galleries can also be found around Santa Ana square (check out Soho Galleries and Galer\u00eda Tataya) which show more upbeat, contemporary art.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"\/mexico\/best-mexico-160377\">VISIT MERIDA ON THIS 15-DAY &#8216;BEST OF MEXICO&#8217;\u00a0SMALL GROUP TOUR<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last but not least,\u00a0visiting the nearby <strong><a href=\"\/adventures\/best-maya-ruins\/\">Maya ruins<\/a><\/strong> is a must. Less-known than their bigger sister Chichen Itz\u00e1, Uxmal and Dzibilchalt\u00fan, respectively 52 miles southwest and 10 miles north of M\u00e9rida\u00a0, are my absolute favorites. The first is situated in the jungle, and is much less crowded than Chichen Itz\u00e1; the second boasts the &#8216;House of the Seven Dolls&#8217;, a temple that was given that name\u00a0because of the offering of seven stone human figures that were found inside. Every dish you eat in Yucat\u00e1n uses\u00a0local products\u00a0that won&#8217;t be found in other Mexican states. Be prepared to try <em>escabeche, cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, frijol con puerco, relleno negro\/blanco, queso relleno, papazules, salbutes, tostadas <\/em>and<em> poc chuuc<\/em> as they represent the best of what you can eat here.<\/p>\n<p>Head straight\u00a0to Lucas de Galv\u00e9z Market, the biggest in town, a huge pink building on street 56 between streets 65 and 67.\u00a0 Typically Mexican, the place is as crowded as it is noisy, as colorful as it is magical.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19341\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19341\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19341\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Mexico-street-food-cooks-shop-e1491509624533.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico street food\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Market eats in Mexico<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/mexico\/mexico-real-food-adventure-160380\">Into Mexican food? I usually bring my own little glass containers for spices, cloth bags for dry goods and mesh bags for fresh produce, in order to avoid plastic bags. You may also refill your water jug and try one of the delicious natural juices sold at the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t neglect\u00a0the food stalls here, either. Night and day markets, and nightly music and dancing by Santa Lucia or Santa Ana squares is where the fun begins. There&#8217;s also traditional costumes and dances on Main Square every Monday night at 8pm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20094\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20094\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Merida-2-e1494961447489.jpg\" alt=\"Merida night Mexico\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Merida by night<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Remember to browse Paseo Montejo, a tree-lined street offering some of the city&#8217;s most iconic buildings. It&#8217;s known as M\u00e9rida&#8217;s\u00a0\u201cChamps Elysees\u201d \u2013\u00a0visit, and you&#8217;ll see why. Locals love going there on Saturday nights to sit on the benches, listen to music, eat a <em>marquesita<\/em> \u2013 hard crepe filled with cheese and chocolate \u2013 and walk from one bar to another, taking it easy.<\/p>\n<h3>Final notes on\u00a0M\u00e9rida<\/h3>\n<p>As the capital of Yucat\u00e1n state, M\u00e9rida\u00a0has around one million inhabitants. But I promise that when there you&#8217;ll never feel like it&#8217;s crowded or unsafe.\u00a0In fact, walking around the city will make you marvel at the peaceful atmosphere around you. Going out at night is a regular activity\u00a0for both locals and foreigners, and the vibe\u00a0is very carefree.<\/p>\n<p>One-way streets (even-numbered from East to West and odd-numbered from North to South) only allow so much traffic.\u00a0 Watch out for city buses zooming by and taxis honking at everyone on foot. Otherwise, you&#8217;ll be fine.
