Except this time, we won\u2019t be going home again and doing a jig. Instead, we\u2019ll be delivering them to some \u2018grandmas\u2019 on the outskirts of the city, as part of Urban Adventures\u2019 Farm to Feast In Focus tour.<\/p>\n<p>In case you haven&#8217;t heard about them, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanadventures.com\/\">Urban Adventures <\/a>is Intrepid&#8217;s sister company. They offer small, local-led day tours in over 150 cities. Tours range in length from a few hours to a whole day, making them the perfect addition to an Intrepid trip, and a great way to fill a city stopover.<\/p>\n<p>Urban Adventures In Focus tours are special tours run in conjunction with local non-profits and accelerators around the world. They offer travellers the opportunity to hear real local stories, and support local projects and businesses as they fight community issues from the ground up.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CKDwN9Bg0xg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So while it may sound like some kind of hipster foodie experience, Farm to Feast is anything but. It\u2019s a social enterprise tour run in conjunction with One Horizon, a local organisation working to alleviate poverty in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/kenya\">Kenya <\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/tanzania\"> Tanzania<\/a>. Our escort for the day is Colin Murray, an Australian man who established One Horizon 12 years ago, and Solomon (or \u2018Sol\u2019), a vivacious Kikuyu man from the Central Highlands \u2014 and our In Focus guide.<\/p>\n<p>Before he started working for In Focus, Sol was a tour guide with a local operator, driving for 70 to 80 hours a week but getting paid just $150 a month. He was so exhausted that he would often sleep in the van under a blanket, and went for days on end without seeing his wife and two young daughters.<\/p>\n<p>He tells us all this as we drive to the market. If the conditions were so bad, I ask, why didn\u2019t he leave? \u201cWhen you have a family to feed, what choice to do you have? You can\u2019t stand up to corruption or just find a new job. It doesn\u2019t work like that.\u201d He smiles. \u201cBut now things are different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018market\u2019 turns out to be a small pig farm tucked behind an iron shack in a dusty backstreet of Nairobi. With Sol\u2019s guidance, we select five of the healthiest looking piglets (all vaccinated), pay the guy and watch as some locals wrestle the animals into hessian bags and onto the back of two motorbikes. It\u2019s quite a sight. Soon we\u2019re back in the car and on the way to our destination: a local community centre and school.<\/p>\n<h3>It takes a village<\/h3>\n<p>On arrival, we\u2019re greeted by around 20 brightly dressed kids, DIY bottle-top earrings looped around their ears. A cluster of older women stand behind them \u2014 the \u2018grandmothers.\u2019 After we\u2019re introduced to the school principal, the group breaks into a series of well-rehearsed welcome songs (as people often do in Kenya).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2478.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2478.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2478-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2478-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2478-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the kids\u2019 parents?\u201d I whisper to Colin. He tells me that for one reason or another, they can no longer look after them; perhaps they\u2019re too sick, or have passed away. So it\u2019s up to the kids\u2019 grandparents to care for them now.<\/p>\n<p>After the concert is over, the women introduce themselves, some shy, others coming forward to clasp our hands warmly. We\u2019re led around the back of the school to a pig pen, where we present the squirming piglets, one by one, to the group. Then we sit down together and enjoy a simple meal of beans, bread and <em>ugali<\/em> (a maize flour dish eaten across East Africa).<\/p>\n<p>All these families don\u2019t live here together, of course. Most have their own place close by, but come to the centre to tend the pigs and enjoy each other\u2019s company while the kids are in class. That\u2019s the thing that strikes me most about the experience, actually: an underlying sense of community, of support. These women aren\u2019t raising their grandkids all on their own; they\u2019re doing it together.<\/p>\n<h3>Farming pigs and chickens<\/h3>\n<p>Both the World Health Organisation and the UN have recognised chicken and pig farming as some of the most effective small business industries for overcoming malnutrition in poor communities. For one, they introduce good protein into peoples\u2019 diets. And because chickens and pigs breed quickly and are easy to look after, they\u2019re also a sustainable source of income.<\/p>\n<p>It costs US $40 to purchase a stock piglet (or 10 chicks) in Nairobi. While in the West that might not seem like much, for many Kenyans \u2014 who live on just $2 a day \u2014 it\u2019s beyond their means. Most of the women we meet today are no longer able to do strenuous work and there\u2019s no pension in Kenya, so it\u2019s hard to get by \u2014 especially when you have grandkids to look after. The simple gift of a pig can make a huge difference in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Once a piglet is handed over, it\u2019s raised until it\u2019s about 10 months old, then bred. You\u2019ll usually get about 10 piglets in a litter; the farmer will raise them until they\u2019re nice and big and can be eaten or sold for meat. A fully grown pig can sell for up to 20,000 Kenyan shillings (US $190).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2477.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19069\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2477.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2477-425x239.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2477-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/kenya_UA_nairobi-2477-585x329.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s not just a matter of doling out pigs and skipping off again. One Horizon helps the women care for the animals by providing feed and scraps from soup kitchens and schools around the city. They also work with government livestock officials who come to show the new farmers how to keep their animals clean and fed, and how to build sturdy pens that keep out mongooses. The idea is to provide the grandmas with the tools and skills they need to start their own business, and support them to grow from there.<\/p>\n<h3>One Horizon<\/h3>\n<p>A full 100% of proceeds from Nairobi\u2019s In Focus tours go back into One Horizon projects. One Horizon employs around 120 people and operates 23 centres in Nairobi \u2014 including women\u2019s centres, schools, youth centres, centres for the elderly, and rescue centres for street kids.<\/p>\n<p>Every day, One Horizon feeds about 2,000 people. They buy from local farmers and grain producers, as it\u2019s cheaper, supports the local economy, and means the money doesn\u2019t go through corrupt systems or authorities. Plus, it\u2019s good, wholesome food for the kids, who are also subject to regular health checks. \u201cSolving poverty is not a monumental job,\u201d says Colin.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s centres provide rent-free housing for marginalised women to help them get back on their feet. Many women are HIV-positive and suffer discrimination from their own husbands and families, so are forced into homelessness. With the support of One Horizon, they train in small businesses \u2014 to be a seamstress, perhaps, or a pig or chicken farmer. It usually takes about two to three years for them to become self-sufficient.<\/p>\n<h3>Towards a sustainable, self-sufficient future<\/h3>\n<p>Like with the pig farming, this is the ultimate goal of One Horizon and indeed, all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanadventures.com\/in-focus-stories\/\">In Focus<\/a> projects: sustainability and self-sufficiency. In the past 12 years, some 32 centres have been handed back to local communities, and more than 200 grandmothers have graduated through the Farm to Feast program. While they will always be supported (and remain part of the peer support program to new recruits), the women are increasingly able to provide for themselves and educate their families as their piggeries grow larger. It is because of Urban Adventures and their travellers, says Colin, that we are well on the way to eradicating generational poverty within this group of people. Most of the time, they don\u2019t have a choice. All they need is someone to help them, to support them for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think back to the women at the school, proudly raising their pigs and grandkids. Lucky for me, these things go together rather nicely. I dig sticky weather, abandoned buildings, visiting planetariums and getting from A to B in the most interesting way possible (husky sled, old yellow school bus, rollerblading etc). While I think the phrase \u201cgetting under the skin of a place\u201d is kind of gross, I\u2019m totally on board with the idea behind it. One time I spent a week in an apple orchard with an artist who restores old gypsy caravans for a living.
