Well, that&#8217;s not far off the reality. As the largest desert in Asia, the Gobi might cover northern <strong><a href=\"\/china\" data-wpil=\"url\">China<\/a><\/strong> and southern <strong><a href=\"\/mongolia\">Mongolia<\/a><\/strong>, but it feels like a whole different world. A remote, alien one, where few people venture, and even fewer venture for 46 days, in an attempt to cross it on foot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enter Chloe Burles, who just last year became the youngest Brit to walk the length of the Gobi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yep, we&#8217;re talking trekking 1,600 km at age 23 (having casually climbed Kilimanjaro prior to this). In honor of International Women&#8217;s Day, we had a chat with the adventurer herself \u2013 to find out about the highs, the lows and everything in between.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18647\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18647\" class=\"wp-image-18647 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/12143074_10156195504705370_2295982786246339212_n-1-002-e1488929524547.jpg\" alt=\"Chloe Burles Gobi Desert\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chloe Burles<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>What inspired you to take on such a challenge in the first place?<\/h4>\n<p>I can honestly say the idea just popped in my head and then it escalated from there. It wasn\u2019t until I was flying over the desert, en-route to Ulaanbaatar, that it really hit home what I was about to do!<\/p>\n<h4>What was training like?<\/h4>\n<p>Training was tough because I was working, chasing sponsorship and handling media. I did a combo of gym\/ swim\/ spin\/ running. I also did laps around the area I was living.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/mongolia\/wild-mongolia-160799\"><strong>RELATED: CHECK OUT OUR 15-DAY MONGOLIA GROUP TOUR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>What was the Gobi desert like?<\/h4>\n<p>Everyone thinks it\u2019s hot and sandy because it\u2019s a desert but that&#8217;s not always the case. There were days where it was snowing, raining, windy&#8230;there were even \u2018mini tornados\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Mongolian locals told me only lucky people see rain in the desert but I didn\u2019t feel so lucky when I found out my tent wasn\u2019t waterproof!<\/p>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/mongolia_Gobi-Desert-sunset-e1488935982499.jpg\" alt=\"Gobi Desert Mongolia\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/>What was the toughest challenge of the expedition itself?<\/h4>\n<p>The food! Especially being a vegetarian, as my options were very limited. I had biscuits for breakfast, pasta for lunch and dinner with a sprinkling of Gobi onion which grows in the desert! Once in one of the villages you find in the Gobi I found a jar of imported US pasta sauce that I made last the entire next week. It was the tastiest thing in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Washing wasn&#8217;t easy either. I could only wash every 10 days&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8050-e1488930032394.jpg\" alt=\"Mongolia Gobi Desert\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/>What surprised you most about the trek?<\/h4>\n<p>I think I was surprised by what I was capable of. When I first started I would be doing roughly 30km (19 miles) a day but this increased to 40-50km which I never thought I could do. There were days where I was in a lot of pain but had no choice but to continue.<\/p>\n<p>There were also days when I was really scared&#8230;of wolves, of snakes, the unpredictable weather, the notorious Gobi death worm!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/mongolia\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Mongolia-banner.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Luckily my sponsors, Thuraya, had provided me with a satellite phone and satellite wifi which made my trip, as I could still talk to family and friends despite being in the middle of nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the trek taught me that you are capable of anything, even if you don\u2019t think you are.<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_8178-e1488930724209.jpg\" alt=\"Mongolia Gobi Desert\" width=\"800\" height=\"448\" \/>Did you\u00a0manage to fit in any sightseeing?<\/h4>\n<p>Of course! The capital Ulaanbaatar is pretty crowded, its completely different to the Gobi. I went to the Zaisan Memorial, Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue, and The Moon Stone Folk, Song &amp; Dance Ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>But nothing beats staying in a traditional yurt and drinking camel\u2019s milk in the Gobi! My favorite day was spent at the Khongoryn Els, a giant sand dune known as \u201csinging sands\u201d. It was just magical.<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intrepidtravel.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_7782-e1488930527162.jpg\" alt=\"Gobi Desert Mongolia\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/>Where would you like to travel (maybe in more of a relaxed fashion) next?<\/h4>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure I really do relaxed holidays! I\u2019ve been working on my cross-country skiing after a race I did last year in Norway so I\u2019d like to do more of that (maybe to the North Pole\u2026). I&#8217;d also love to go diving in the Galapagos.<\/p>\n<h4>What advice would you give to travelers thinking of taking on a challenge like this or Kilimanjaro?<\/h4>\n<p>Do it! You\u2019ll regret it if you don\u2019t. I think Kilimanjaro was what really sparked my interest in serious adventures and gave me the confidence to go further. I got altitude sickness on the summit day so getting to the top made it all the more rewarding.
