Except they aren\u2019t.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re embarking on an African safari, and it\u2019s 21st century. The truth is, you don\u2019t have to look like Attenborough to visit <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa<\/a> (although he IS an idol of ours); you can leave the khaki and utility pockets at home and still survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we\u2019ve cleared that up, there are still some essentials you simply can\u2019t do without. Due to the nature of Africa and its climatic differences, you&#8217;ll likely need to pack a little differently on this trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that&#8217;s where we (the experts) come in with our ultimate packing guide to Africa. Pack these essentials and stay cool, kind of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Light cotton T-shirts (avoid bright colours, especially for safari)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Shorts, but avoid the really short shorts as most countries in Africa veer more on the conservative side<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Swimwear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Loose-fitting clothing like harem pants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">A hat &#8211; and while you can opt for the wide-brimmed kind you see in safari photos, you may spend more time chasing after it when the wind blows it off than being protected! Opt for one with a strap, or bring a snug baseball-style cap instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things&nbsp;for cold weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re about to blow your mind, but Africa is not <em>always<\/em> hot. During winter the temperature can even drop below freezing. Here\u2019s what you need to keep warm as you hike those last few feet to the top of <a href=\"\/kilimanjaro\">Kilimanjaro<\/a> or safeguard your snugness while camping in the <a href=\"http:\/\/botswana\/okavango-delta\/safari\">Okavango<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Down jacket &#8211; Perfect for compressing into a rucksack or day pack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Rain jacket &#8211; Lightweight &amp; waterproof. You know the drill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Thermals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Long trousers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Woollen jumpers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Beanie (yes, really! If you have space, take these things with you. If you don\u2019t, don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Travel cutlery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">A zoom lens to snap all the African wildlife you can on safari<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Binoculars for animal eye-spy!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Travel towel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Sleeping bag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">A good book (or two\u2026 probably not 8 each, as we did)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things for women<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa can be pretty conservative. So, while you may think of bringing your resort-style summer clothes, it may be a better idea to bring longer-length, breathable garments instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Any specific female hygiene products you prefer, as stock and choice are pretty limited across the region<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Try to avoid short shorts and skirts and opt for longer trousers and midi\/maxi skirts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Long sleeve shirt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Sarong<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Always pack spare toilet paper. On the off chance that a public toilet has it, you\u2019ll probably have to hand over some cash for a mere square of the stuff. Best to be safe, and it also doubles up as napkins, tissues, etc!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things for long bus rides<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While you&#8217;re likely to be completely enthralled by the passing scenery, there are a few ways to make those hours on a bus pass a little faster. Here are some helpful items to have handy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Meals\/snacks: bit of a no-brainer; it&#8217;s always wise to have something nearby to munch on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Some spare cash for a cheeky roadside samosa (or toilet break)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Warm clothes if your travels are starting early or finishing late<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">A really long, interesting book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Downloaded playlists and podcasts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Lots of water.
