About Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Revealed Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Victoria Falls

Plunging 108 m at a rate of more than 12,000 cubic metres per second at its heaviest flow, Victoria Falls is big – so big, in fact, that it’s the largest waterfall on the planet. Aptly named by the locals as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates to the ‘smoke that thunders’, you’re likely to hear the falls before you see them. With sprays that rise up to 400 m, some say they can be been seen from kilometres away, prepare to be astonished (and a little wet) during a visit to this impressive site.

Day 2 Hwange National Park

Embark on a wildlife adventure in the Hwange National Park. Stop by the Painted Dog Conservation Group, an organisation that aims to protect the rare and endangered African wild dogs from extinction. Later, jump in a jeep and head out on safari to spot elephants, lions and some of the other one hundred species of mammals that call this park home. Sleep overnight on the boundaries of the park and let the sounds of the African wilderness lull you to sleep.

Days 3-4 Lake Kariba

Leave the land and board a houseboat on Lake Kariba for a cruisy few days (literally). Explore the lake between Mlibizi and Binga and spot vast quantities of game, both big and small, along the shores of Lake Kariba.

Day 5 Bulawayo

Spend an afternoon exploring the country’s second largest city.

Day 6 Chimanimani/Bvumba Mountains

Make tracks towards the Bvumba Mountains for some spectacular scenic views. Explore the area on foot and pay a visit to the Bvumba Botanical Gardens – your nose is in for a treat as the smells of roses, fuchsias and camellias waft through the air. Keep eyes peeled for cheeky samango monkeys that forage in the trees. And if time permits, enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea in a local cafe.

Day 8 Masvingo

Explore the oldest colonial settlement in Zimbabe, Masvingo, and take a walking tour around the ruins of Great Zimbabwe. Constructed in the 11th century, the ruins are thought to have been the royal palace of the old Zimbabwean monarch.

Days 9-10 Matobo National Park

Spend the day wandering around the world famous Matobo National Park, one of the best places to spot black and white rhinos. With a landscape that’s appears seemingly straight out of the Lion King – think giant boulders balancing on top of one another, black eagles soaring high in the air and leopards stalking behind the scenes – it’s easy to see why the park is known as the spiritual home of Zimbabwe. Matobo is of great significant to the local people and many important ceremonies still take place on various sites within the park.

Day 11 Victoria Falls

Depart Bulawayo and head to Victoria Falls, where this trip comes to an end.
