About Tanzania

Kilimanjaro - Rongai Route Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Marangu

Acclimatise to the altitude in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro with a swim in the hotel’s pool or by diving into a hearty meal at a local restaurant. Get a good night’s sleep in preparation for the big week ahead.

Day 2 Simba Camp

After meeting the guide and porters who will accompany the group on the trek, set off for a few hours of gradual uphill hiking. Journey through the rich forests along the north-eastern side of the mountain before arriving at camp, located at an altitude of 2,600 m.

Day 3 Kikelewa Caves

Hit the uphill terrain with your head to the sky en route to the Kikelewa Caves. Today’s trek is a long but rewarding day, with a climb in altitude of 1,000 m, most of which will be reached in the first half of the day. To keep your mind off the burning in your thighs, admire the surrounding scenery while keeping an eye out for wildlife. Stop for lunch at Second Cave, then continue towards camp at Kikelewa Caves.

Day 4 Mawenzi Tarn

Continue along a path that climbs up a steep ridge directly towards Mawenzi. To minimise altitude effects, don’t be afraid to take the path slowly. Traverse across a rocky landscape before descending into tonight’s camp at Tarn Valley (4,300 m). The campsite is right underneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.

Day 5 Kibo Hut

Descend into the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, and head towards Kibo Hut, where tonight’s camp awaits. The grey, desert-like landscape contrasts with the dense rainforest scenery of the past few days. Rest up as best you can because you’ll be woken extremely early for the amazing opportunity of trekking to Gillman’s Point for sunrise.

Day 6 Uhuru Peak

In the dark of the night, prepare to make for the summit. It's a steep, zigzagging road to the top, but worth every step. With six hours of footprints behind you, check out the view from Gillman’s Point (5,700 m). Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), Africa’s highest point and the world’s tallest free-standing volcano. It will feel like you are on top of the world.

Days 7-8 Marangu

Descend back through the lush forest towards the creature comfort of the hotel. On the final evening, perhaps get the team together for a celebratory meal to toast, relive and revel in the achievement of conquering Mt Kilimanjaro.
