Highlights of Tunisia SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Set the senses on fire with a journey to the medina of Tunis before strolling through the lively souqs to bargain for souvenirs. Afterwards, head to Carthage, a waterside city where the ruins of Antonine baths, Roman amphitheater and Punic ports are waiting to be explored. Journey to the village of Sidi Bou Said Andalous for a stroll through narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and decorative blue shutters and doors.
Better understand this bubbly slice of Africa with a visit to the Bardo Museum, where archaeological finds reign supreme. Arguably the best Roman ruins in Africa, explore the archaeological site of Dougga where the remains of an ancient city lie. Walk among incredibly well preserved temples, political centres, baths and markets to fully experience this bygone Roman civilisation.
Wake in the holiest city in Tunisia and head out on a walking tour. Visit the Great Mosque of Oqba Ibn Nafi to appreciate the impressive ninth-century Islamic architecture, then refuel with a bite of makroudh (pastry stuffed with dates). With full bellies, head to the oasis town of Tozeur and catch some shade beneath one of the 200,000 palm trees popping out of this unique desert landscape.
Be wowed by the dry salt lake of Chott el-Jerid on the drive towards Douz. Watch punters at the daily camel market before climbing on one of these friendly beasts and taking an amble to a few oases. It will be a bouncy ride, so be sure to take a relaxing soak in the hot springs at Ksar Ghilane when you get there. Later, enjoy some desert stargazing from the foot of your tent. The silence and vastness of the surrounds makes for a magical and unforgettable night.
It can be very hot in the middle of the desert (surprise, surprise!) so head to Matmata where troglodytes - underground houses - are built to protect the Berber locals from the heat. The moon-like landscape is totally surreal and has been used as a set in Starwars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Then, breathe in the refreshing sea breeze in the fishing village of Mahdia and visit the 16th-century fortress, Borg el-Kebir. Chill out on the beaches, evade the heat in a museum or chow down on some fresh seafood in an oceanside restaurant.
Prepare to be wowed by the incredible Roman amphitheater in El-Jem. Dating back to AD 238, this site staged gladiator shows, chariot races and was even used in scenes of Monty Python’s The Life of Brian. On the drive back to Tunis, take one last glance at the epic surrounding scenery before enjoying a final group meal of merguez sausage, fragrant couscous and spicy Ojja stew.
Bid Tunisia farewell and perhaps head off on your next adventure in incredible northern Africa.
