From stretching on the sand to stretching your legs for a bike ride, take an active adventure from Ubud to the Gili Islands

If you were ever to create islands for the adventurous, then they’d surely look just like Bali and Lombok. These havens of incredible landscapes and extraordinary diversity are perfect for those that like their journeys with a big hit of activity. Dotted with small, character-filled villages, smouldering volcanoes rising out of lush rich fields, idyllic beaches and colourful reefs – these islands reward the curious and the animated traveller. Beginning in Ubud, cycle through backstreets, quaint villages and rice fields, conquer the slopes of simmering Mt Batur, and discover the underwater wonders of Bali Barat National Park. Ride white water rapids near Ubud, walk through rice paddies to Candidasa, and saddle up for a bike ride along the coast to Amed. Cruise over to Lombok and spot monkeys in the forests near Mt Rinjani and search for sea turtles around the remote Gili Islands. In between all this action there’s plenty of time to experience local culture, from Balinese cuisine to Hindu-Buddhist temples, and get a healthy dose of beachside chill-time – this trip strikes the perfect balance.

Why we love this trip

  • Enjoy a mixture of adventurous activities, from snorkelling to hiking to rafting – perfect for those who love to get their pulse going

  • Adventure to the summit of Mt Batur and the crater rim of Mt Rinjani. On a clear day you may be able to see across from peak to the other

  • Snorkel the crystal waters around Menjangan Island reef and off the coast of the Gili Islands. Look of for schools of tropical fish and, if you're lucky, gliding sea turtles

  • Get an insight into the real Indonesia, with cultural activities and visiting local villages

  • Lombok and the Gili Islands are less frequented than their Balinese neighbour. Stay on the East Coast of Lombok in an area off the tourist trail.

  • Relax and unwind on pristine beaches in Amed and Gili Air, the perfect places to rest your bones after your active adventures

Is this trip right for you?

  • A good level of fitness is essential, as there are a range of physical activities included (cycling, hiking Mt Batur and Mt Rinjani, rafting, and two snorkelling trips).

  • There is one very early start – your sunrise climb of Mt Batur kicks off at 3 am. This means you'll be walking over some gravel and volcanic rock in the dark. Head torches, warm clothing and good walking shoes are a must. The view at sunrise is well worth the effort, especially if the weather's fine!

  • The white water rafting excursion just outside Ubud (Day 10), involves grade II and III rapids, so a level of confidence in the water is essential. Similarly, you'll need to be a confident swimmer for the included snorkelling trips.

  • Cycling the beautiful coastal route to Amed (Day 13) involves hills, twists and turns, and will cover up to 35 kilometres. Rest assured a support vehicle is there if you need it.

  • Lombok is more conservative than it's Balinese neighbour. Particularly in smaller towns and during village walks, it is best to dress conservatively.

The tour ends in central Ubud where you'll have time to explore the many cafes, galleries and shops on your own. Today you'll also visit Bumi Sehat, a local community-based health clinic whose mission is to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality.
In the evening you will sit down to a traditional Kecak dance performance. Driven not by musical instruments but by human chanting, this fascinating theatrical performance is considered a highlight by many travellers.

There are plenty of opportunities to visit some of the small and intricately carved temples. Your ride concludes in Ubud. Next, head for the hills and the village of Sidemen, travelling by minivan (approximately 2 hours). Set against a backdrop of Bali's highest peak, Mt Agung, the peaceful and friendly village of Sidemen is proof that Bali has pockets tucked away from the tourism the island is famous for. It's a little cooler up here, thanks to the elevation.

Continuing your journey higher into the mountains, drive along the crater rim road to a fishing village on the edge of Lake Batur (approximately 2 hours). Volcanic Mt Batur (1,717 m) sits inside a stark and spectacular caldera, and with Lake Batur below it's a stunning sight. Get up at 3 am this morning to walk to the summit of Mt Batur (approximately 1.5–2 hours). You'll be glad you made the effort to rise early when you see the gorgeous sunrise over the valleys of Bali. On a clear morning, it's possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok's Mt Rinjani. This may well be one of the most memorable parts of your trip. Do keep in mind, however, that the weather can be unpredictable and sometimes the view is obscured by clouds. After descending the volcano, there's an option to soak in hot springs with fantastic views over the lake and caldera.
