About India , Nepal

Kathmandu to Mumbai Summary

Add to Shortlist

Day 1 Kathmandu

Visit Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, and soak up its rich atmosphere. Perhaps sit on the steps in Durbar Square to see Nepali life swirl past or head out to visit the temples of Pashupatinath and Bodhnath.

Days 2-3 Chitwan National Park

After the bustle and crush of Kathmandu, travel down to the jungle lowlands for a touch of peace and quiet. Visit Bis Hajaar Tal, known as ‘20,000 Lakes’. Keep your eyes peeled for peacocks and wild boar and if we’re lucky, rhinos and tigers. In the evening, be dazzled by a traditional Nepali dance demonstration.

Day 4 Gorokphur

Spend a morning seeking out Chitwan's shy and rare one-horned rhino on a jungle walk or jeep safari then travel to the Nepal-India border.

Days 5-6 Varanasi

Set on the banks of the sacred River Ganges, Varanasi is awash with sights and sounds to overwhelm the senses. Learn the different uses of the ghats - both spiritual and secular.

Days 7-8 Bandhavgarh National Park

Home to one of the world’s largest Bengal Tiger populations, Bandhavgarh National Park has been running conservation projects to protect these impressive animals since the early seventies. Take a safari and keep an eye out for the big cats, as well as deer, hyenas and porcupines.

Days 9-10 Khajuraho

Khajuraho was once the capital of the Chandella Kings who built the magnificent Hindu and Jain temples here around 1000 AD. Considered to be 'one of the seven wonders of India', the temples have been almost perfectly preserved.

Days 11-12 Agra

Set out early on a rickshaw tour of Agra. Be spellbound by surreal beauty as you watch the sun rise over the Taj Mahal and step back in time as you explore the historic Agra Fort.

Days 13-14 Jaipur

Experience the eerie desolation of Fatehpur Sikri en route to Jaipur, the 'Pink City'. Those inclined can take an early morning hot air balloon ride over ancient Jaipur to spot the city’s many palaces from the sky.

Days 15-16 Delhi

Lose yourself in the hustle and bustle of dramatic Delhi. Feel the pulse of India’s heartland as you join the crowds on the city streets to explore the sights and sounds of this incredible city.

Day 17 Bikaner

Located in the Thar desert, Bikaner is known for its camel farm, great food, rustic charm and extraordinary palaces, fort and temples.

Days 18-20 Jaisalmer/Camel Safari

Located within the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer is like an ancient oasis with its heritage architecture, medieval temples and crumbling, yet majestic, fort. Journey into the desert of Jaisalmer on camels, watching the sun set over the dunes and enjoying a campfire evening before sleeping under the stars. Like a city risen from the desert sands, Jaisalmer's sand-colored buildings, busting bazaars and fascinating living fort all help give the city a wonderful old-world feel.

Days 21-22 Jodhpur

India's enigmatic 'Blue City', Jodhpur, has a captivating Old Town with palaces, heritage buildings, colorful streets and the Mehrangarh Fort shining like a jewel high above the city.

Days 23-25 Udaipur

With dusty hills in the background and tranquil lakes its centrepiece, Udaipur is a truly beautiful city with fabulous heritage buildings, restaurants and narrow laneways.

Day 26 Mandu

Founded in the 6th century, Mandu was an important military outpost for many centuries and is now the site of some remarkable and well-preserved ruins.

Days 27-28 Ajanta/Ellora

Thirty spectacular cave monuments, decorated in Buddhist paintings and sculptures and dating from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD, can be found in Ajanta. Between the 5th and 10th century AD, Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temples, monasteries and chapels were intricately carved into the hills around Ellora - the result is breathtaking.

Day 29 Ellora

Carry on the temple touring with a visit out to nearby Ellora. See magnificent monumental Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves cut from the rock face of the Charanandri hills.

Days 30-31 Mumbai

A city of contradictions and never dull, Mumbai has truly wonderful sights vs the hard to see; incredible cultural depth vs rampant consumerism; immense riches vs crippling poverty.
