We realized early on that with great travel comes great responsibility. We've built Intrepid as a model for sustainable travel around the world, and a big part of that was going fully carbon neutral in 2010. Something we're still pretty proud of.

In honor of Earth Day 2015, we're asking you to join us and pledge your support to travel responsibly. Tell us how you can make a difference and you'll get a chance to WIN an 8-day adventure in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Take the pledge!

People making a difference

Responsible travel at Intrepid

We explain responsible travel as; respecting people, cultures and local environments; in the distribution of wealth; in good will and cross-cultural sharing; and in contributing to sustainable development. Below are just some of the ways we support responsible travel here at Intrepid. Read the full Progress Report>>

100% Carbon Neutral Since 2010

Being carbon neutral involves calculating Intrepid's climate-damaging carbon emissions, avoiding, reducing and seeking a less carbon intensive alternative where possible and then balancing the remaining emissions through a carbon offset activity. Intrepid follows a project plan which describes the activites and milestones necessary to keep us carbon neutral year after year.

Elephant Welfare

In 2014, we announced that our trip itineraries would no longer include elephant rides. This decision was the result of a research initiative into elephant welfare, in partnership with World Animal Protection. We hope to create enough awareness of the impacts elephant rides and inappropriate entertainment venues can have on these creatures to influence the travel industry to take similar action and stop offering elephant rides and attending wildlife shows that exploit animals.

Minimize Plastic Waste

We include information in all our trip notes about how Intrepid travelers can obtain safe drinking water in our destinations and avoid the purchase of plastic water bottles. Additionally, on all of our overland trips we provide free water fill up stations on the truck/van.

The Intrepid Foundation

Established in 2002 by our founders, The Intrepid Foundation is a non-profit organization that allows travelers to give back to the communities they visit. Since our creation, we've distributed over $3 million to more than 70 NGO's around teh world, which support initiatives in health care, education, gender equality, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development, environmental conservation and wildlife protection.

The Intrepid difference

How can I travel responsibly?

There are a variety of ways that you can tread lightly on the Earth while you travel. We've put together the ideas below just to get you started.

  • Purchase carbon offsets for your transportation or travel with a tour operator that does this (we do for each one of our passengers!)
  • Take local transportation to reduce fuel usage
  • Carry reusable water bottles when possible or purification tablets. Learn more from our friends at Travelers Against Plastic (TAP)
  • Be aware of your footprint - reduce, reuse, recycle
  • Do not participate in activities that exploit animals. We were the first tour operator to put an end to riding elephants. Learn why>>
  • We strongly encourage our travelers to eat locally produced food and goods. This reduces the 'embodied energy' (energy consumed through production and transport) of the food and goods purchased by our passengers.
  • Economic empowerment of local communities through tourism can help improve education and health services, water supplies and sanitation and reduce dependence on non-sustainable livelihoods such as deforestation.
