Nicaragua to Panama SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Reputedly the oldest city of the 'New World', Granada exudes a quaint and cosy old world charm. Get to know this enchanting town perusing the goods on offer at the Masaya market, admiring the imposing cathedrals or taking the evening air on a leisurely stroll through its cobblestone laneways.
Jump aboard a ferry and cruise out to hour-glass shaped Omotepe Island, trying to catch a sight of the world's only freshwater shark along the way. Decide whether you'd prefer to tackle Concepcion or Maderas volcanos, hire a scooter and explore the island off your own bat or pick a lakeside perch and watch the fishermen haul in the daily catch.
Cross the Costa Rican border into the town of Rincon de la Vieja. An isolated region of stark volcanic peaks, bubbling mud pools and glorious blue waterfalls, you'll half expect to spy a dinosaur roaming through its pristine landscape.
Travel on to San Jose, Costa Rica's gritty but charismatic capital. Familiarise yourself with the city during the day on a guided orientation walk, or if you haven't yet quite got your fill of volcanos, sign up for an optional day tour out to Irazu Volcano and the Ososi Valley.
Sitting in the shadow of Costa Rica's majestic Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna offers steaming hot springs and endless outdoor activities.
Monteverde's Cloud Forest Reserve is a true nature lover's paradise. Lush, green and teeming with colorful butterflies, unique plants and exotic creatures.
Boasting abundant wildlife, turquoise water and white-sand beaches, Manuel Antonio National Park is a beautiful place to explore by land or sea.
Set in the heart of Costa Rica's fertile Central Valley, San Jose buzzes with color, culture and the spirit of its friendly residents.
Venture into the forested woodlands of San Gerardo de Dota, a haven for birding, hiking and fishing enthusiasts. Set out on a bird-spotting tour in search of egrets, toucans, kingfishers and the resplendent quetzal or try your luck with a spot of fly fishing from the banks of the Savegre River.
Arrive in the small coastal town of Golfito on the Caribbean coast. Spend the days exploring the surrounding rainforest by foot or embarking on mangrove kayaking outings from our eco-lodge base.
Drive across the border into neighbouring Panama. Known as much for its high grade coffee as its picturesque natural scenery, Boquete is the perfect place to while away the hours in a cosy cafe or set out on any number of spectacular hiking trails.
Get comfy for a long drive on to Panama's bold and bodacious capital city. See a different side to the city on a guided orientation tour through the becomingly run-down UNESCO World Heritage Site of Casco Viejo and learn about the extraordinary engineering efforts which gave birth to the world's most famous canal. With a rapidly growing economy and burgeoning middle class, Panama City has a plethora of excellent wining and dining establishments – why not ask your leader to suggest a restaurant for a memorable final group dinner.
