Situated on the shores of Cook Inlet, in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, Anchorage is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. If arriving early, explore the spectacular surrounds, visit the Anchorage Museum or wander around the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Maybe catch a moose or two wandering around town.
Head north on the old Denali Highway into the unspoilt wilderness of Denali National Park. Take a bus tour into the backcountry for incredible views of this unique landscape of taiga forest and high-alpine tundra. Keep your eyes peeled for bears, wolves, caribou and Dall sheep along the way. Perhaps go river rafting, check out some dogsled demonstrations or take a scenic flight over Mt McKinley.

Venture off the main highway into the largest national park in the US. Home to nine of North America’s sixteen highest peaks, Wrangell-St Elias National Park offers tremendous rugged ranges and sensational snowy landscapes. Gaze in wonder at the impressive icefields and glaciers, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the mountain goats, moose and bear that call this park home.
Travel back to Anchorage and discover a little more about this laidback city. Do a spot of shopping or explore more of the nearby walking tracks and trails.
Fly to the Alaskan capital of Juneau. Discover the many sides of this town – from quirky local hangouts to cruise ship souvenir shops – take a tour of the Alaska Brewing Company or visit the State Museum. Those keen to do more hiking can daytrip out to Mendenhall Glacier or explore several of the stunning hiking trails close to the city the area.
Jump on the ferry to Sitka, the picturesque island across the Inside Passage from Juneau. Renowned for its incredible whale-watching, take the opportunity to venture out on a wildlife boat cruise. Keep your eyes peeled for eagles and sea otters too. Maybe kayak around the forested islands and secluded bays or check out the indigenous artefacts at the visitors centre.
Return to Juneau for a final night. Maybe venture out for one sneaky last trek before the tour comes to an end, or spend the day relaxing on the waterfront.
