Day 1 Las Vegas

Kick off this American adventure in style in the world’s capital of gambling, where the casinos provide a lot more than just blackjack tables and pokies. Why not put on a poker face and hit the casino floor, watch a mind-blowing show or stroll the fabulous shopping districts. Famous for all-you-can-eat buffets and a raging nightlife, Vegas has something for everyone.

Day 2 Lake Powell

Dust the sand off your cowboy boots and head to Lake Powell for an overnight stay at a ranch hand's bunkhouse. Chill out by the Colorado River, enjoy some fast-paced water sports or simply take a relaxing stroll around the gargantuan sandstone chasm, Glen Canyon.

Days 3-4 Monument Valley

Sparse and red with jagged stone pillars protruding from the earth, the landscape of Monument Valley is remarkable and is home to more than 200,000 members of the Navajo Tribe. Hot, steamy and breathtaking, be wowed by the scenery, history and geology of this epic American landscape.

Days 5-6 Grand Canyon National Park

Not only is the Grand Canyon one of the most incredible natural phenomenons to view, it is also awesome to explore. Grab a bike and ride the bumpy downhills and thigh-burning uphills, climb into a helicopter for an aerial view of the chasm, take a challenging hike along one of the trails in the park or catch an epic IMAX film at the visitor centre to really see every angle of this impressive landmark.

Day 7 Prescott

Be wooed by the small town charm of Prescott, Arizona's former capital city. Wander down Whiskey Row for a drink and to check out the historical bars and saloons. In the older area of town, admire the Victoria-style architecture and learn more about the history of the city.

Days 8-9 Los Angeles

When in LA, do as the rich and famous do: shop on Rodeo Drive, dine on Melrose Avenue or flex your muscles on Venice Beach. Perhaps take a stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame or pretend you are in your own movie at Warner Brothers Studio. If the celebrity life doesn't appeal, hike around the mountain that holds the Hollywood sign, head to a local farmers' market or find some secluded sands to throw down your beach towel and laze in the sun.

Day 10 Santa Barbara

Surrounded by miles of beautiful beaches, this is one of the best places in the United States to catch some rays. But if an active adventure is what you are after, the American Riviera has it all. Choose to hike to the hot springs of Gavlota Peak, enjoy a few rounds of golf or cross the Santa Barbara Channel to explore a national park.

Days 11-12 San Luis Obispo

Like something from Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, Bubblegum Alley and Soda Lake are just some of the many bizarre sights dotted around San Luis Obispo. Self-proclaimed as the 'happiest place in America', it's possible to see why; with killer sunsets, gorgeous beaches and very friendly locals, San Luis Obispo will have you leaving town with a grin.

Days 13-14 Monterey

Journey to the coast and enjoy the splendours of Monterey. Head to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to see local marine inhabitants, including turtles, dolphins, whales and otters. Then visit Cannery Row, a location made famous in John Steinbeck's 1982 novel. There are plenty of local coastal trails to hike along for spectacular beach views, and the more adventurous can opt to take a short trip to Big Sur, one of the best adventure travel destinations in the world.

Days 15-16 San Francisco

The Golden Gate bridge may be the star of the show in San Francisco, but there is plenty more to uncover in this free-spirited city. Soak up the city's cool vibe before checking out the Academy of Sciences for a whirlwind adventure from the deepest crevasse of the ocean at the Aquarium to the furthest stretches of the universe in the Planetarium. Later, why not explore Chinatown for a succulent dim sum, take a stroll along Fisherman's Wharf for a spot of shopping or indulge in the catch of the day at an ocean-view restaurant.

Day 17 Overnight Train

After an exhausting few days exploring Frisco, board a train bound for Oakland and catch up on some rest.

Day 18 Eugene

Home to the University of Oregon, Eugene is a delightful mix of rural charm, city sophistication and university town liberalism. With a thriving hippie culture, the art scene around town is one of the best in the US.

Days 19-20 Bend

Located on the edge of the Cascade Range and Deschutes River, there is plenty on offer in the mountainous hillside of Bend. Choose to go rock-climbing, hiking or biking, or hit the raging rapids for some hectic whitewater rafting.

Days 21-23 Portland/Mt St Helens

The greenest state in the United States, Portland is best explored on foot. Wander the many parks and become acquainted with some of the friendly dog-owners, or grab a bike and pedal over one (or all) of the eight bridges that connect to downtown Portland. Famed for housing the most microbreweries in the world, take a breather and sip on an original ale or draught before taking a stroll around the aromatic International Rose Test Garden, where the fragrance of over 7,000 rose bushes fill the air.

Days 24-25 Seattle

Travel to the top of the 184-metre-high observation tower for a spectacular city view. Later, join the locals at Pike Place Market, the oldest continually operating famers' market in the United States. Listen to the music of talented buskers and stroll past fish stalls, apothecary stalls, flower shops and fresh food stalls for an incredible sensory experience. Perhaps purchase a few local goodies at the market and take a walk down to Green Lake for a picnic lunch overlooking a pleasant freshwater lake.
