Hit the road in sophisticated San Francisco, a hillside city that rings with the clanging bells of cable cars. Arrive early to sample clam chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf or grab a bike and peddle under the gigantic wires of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Jump in the car, bid farewell to the Bay Area and head for the peaceful surroundings of the Sierra Nevada. Spend two nights camping in the iconic Yosemite National Park, marvelling at thousand-year-old redwoods and awakening to the sound of birdcalls emanating throughout Yosemite Valley. Brave the crowds and conquer Half Dome, gaze across the park from the Cloud Rest Trail or cool off in Lake Tenaya.

Leave the fertile forests behind, stop for snacks at backcountry roadhouses and head for the Eastern Sierra town of Bishop.

Be dazzled by Las Vegas – a high-tech city that thrives in one of the most inhospitable environments on earth. Stroll the strip for a taste of the high life, watch the cards fall in one of Las Vegas’ famed casinos or visit a belt-busting, all-you-can-eat buffet.

Escape the chaos of Vegas and take a leisurely drive along Route 15 to Zion – Utah’s picture-perfect outdoor playground. Tackle the challenging Angels Landing Trail for great views of Zion Canyon or wade through the Virgin River before setting up camp for the night.

Continue on to Lake Powell’s maze of flooded canyons. Hop in a boat and explore the narrow gorges or head to the top of the canyon for excellent views over this unique setting.

Take a short drive to the world’s most famous canyon and spend two days exploring this iconic landscape. Peer over the edge of the kilometre-high South Ridge or perhaps follow the Bright Angel Trail to the floor of this natural wonder.

See what all the fuss is about in the park made famous by U2’s hit album of the same name. Spot wildflowers blooming, clamber over bolder-strewn hills and see the bizarre Joshua trees.

Shoot through turnpikes and across overpasses on the frenetic freeways of Los Angeles. Cruise the boardwalks of Santa Monica, hear up-and-coming music in West Hollywood or browse the boutiques of Melrose Avenue.
