Great Cities of America SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Begin the adventure in the biggest and boldest city in the Midwest – Chicago. The third most populous city in the United States, and definitely one of the friendliest, Chicago is known for its vibrant urban culture, lakeside walking trails and some seriously stunning architecture.
Cross the border into Canada and perhaps head up the giant CN tower for a look at this ultra-cool, ultra-clean capital, or see it from the ground on an optional bike tour. The next day, get a dose of one of North America’s most iconic marvels on a daytrip to the rampaging waters of Niagara falls. If it’s not too cold, don a raincoat and head out on the waters for a Maid of the Mist boat tour.
Brush up on your French and discover a city that wears its European heritage right on its sleeve. Home to more than 80 ethnic communities, Montreal is known for its fantastic food and atmospheric streets and neighbourhoods.
Swap French patisseries for Guinness on tap, and discover the fighting Irish spirit of a town that has been dubbed ‘The Athens of America’. Get caught up in the scholarly history of Boston with a trip to Cambridge, explore the Italian district or walk the Freedom Trail to learn about America’s founding fathers.
From the moment you spot the looming towers of New York on the horizon, it’s hard not to get caught up in the sheer size of this mega metropolis. From Times Square, Broadway, Central Park and the Empire State Building, there’s so much to do here, you could spend months just ticking off your to-do list.
Come for the Rocky Steps, stay for the history – Philadelphia rocks. Take some time to get acquainted with ‘The City of Brotherly Love’ before enjoying a walking tour of its historic sites, including the Liberty Bell, Benjamin Franklin’s house and Independence Hall.
Swap the former capital for the current one and be amazed by the sheer amount of things to see and do among the whitewashed monuments of Washington, DC. Head out on foot and feel like you’re walking through the set of a political drama, taking in the White House, Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the many museums in between.
Queen City, as it’s known, is a sprawling, financial centre, which has got everything from a thriving food scene to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Take the opportunity to try some traditional Southern cuisine with a bike ride through some of the city’s tastiest neighbourhoods.
Often referred to as the ‘New York of the South’, Atlanta is big city with a wide range of parks, museums, restaurants and bars to explore. Enjoy some free time to check out the World of Coca Cola, CNN Center, the Martin Luther King Jr Historic Site, and the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum.
Hop aboard a train and head further into Dixie, arriving in Birmingham just in time to check out one of the centres of the Civil Rights Movement.
Take stock of the ‘Big Easy’, a jazzy, multicultural city that is pretty hard to pin down in one sentence. From the European-inspired French Quarter to the Cajun cuisine, this is one of the country's – if not the world’s – most unique cities.
Enjoy a tour of Sun Studios in Memphis, a place that many consider to be the home of rock 'n' roll. There's also the opportunity to visit Graceland or catch a live blues show in this music-mecca.
Get ready for some more music in the country-rock town of Nashville. Take a stroll down Music Row, where more than 50 record studios and 200 music publishing houses are located, and stop by the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Cruise to Louisville, home of the the Kentucky Derby, the largest collection of Victorian-era homes and, to top it all off, the final resting place of Colonel Sanders. Perhaps take some time out to follow the Bourbon Trail, learning about the history of the beverage, or sample the cuisine of Louisville's up-and-coming food scene.
End the adventure on the shores of the Great Lakes, among the towering skyscrapers of Chicago. Enjoy free time to tackle the many walking trails and parks, head out for some deep-dish pizza or get a bird's-eye view from Willis Tower – the tallest building in the United States.
