Alaska's Inside Passage SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Begin the adventure in Seattle, a dynamic city that mixes edgy urban culture with hip cafes, quirky galleries and a vibrant live music scene. If you find yourself up early, why not head down to Pike Place Market to grab a fresh breakfast and to watch fish fly.
Transfer by train to Bellingham and board a ferry bound for America's north. Cruise along the scenic coastline by day, and if the conditions are favourable, sleep on deck under a blanket of stars.
Arrive at one of Alaska's most southerly cities, Ketchikan. Explore the Misty Fjords National Monument – an area of steep valleys formed by glaciers and volcanic lava. Enjoy optional activities such as kayaking, visiting the totem museum or a trip to Metlakatla village.
Jump aboard the ferry and spend another moonlit night floating through Alaska's inside passage.
Disembark at Wrangell, once a trading post for Russian fur-seal merchants and one of the oldest European settlements. Take the chance to spot bears, eagles, sea lions, harbor seals and whales by taking a boat trip on the Stikine River.
You know the drill by now – it's back to the boat for another night of cruising.
Arrive in the state capital for three days of free time to explore the city's historical downtown area and numerous hiking trails, and perhaps even the Glacier Bay National Park, which can be reached by plane on a day trip. There's also the chance to check out the Alaska Brewing Company, a side-trip that's guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any serious beer drinker.
Return to the ferry and enter the Gulf of Alaska.
Arrive in Yakutat and perhaps check out Hubbard Glacier and Wrangell–St Elias National Park. Believe it or not, there is also the option to don a thick wetsuit and head into the icy waters for a spot of surfing beneath snowcapped mountains.
Spend a final night aboard the ferry, heading further across the Gulf of Alaska toward the harbour town of Whittier.
Enjoy a free day in Whittier before making the final push to Anchorage, where this Alaskan adventure ends. Why not stay on for a few days after the trip to explore this surprisingly modern city.
