Begin this adventure in Seattle, a dynamic city that mixes edgy urban culture with hip cafes, quirky galleries and a vibrant live music scene. If you find yourself up early, why not head down to Pike Place Market to grab breakfast and to watch the world go by.
Arrive at one of Alaska's most southerly cities, Ketchikan. Explore the Misty Fjords National Monument – an area of steep valleys formed by glaciers and volcanic lava. Enjoy optional activities such as kayaking, visiting the totem museum or a trip to Metlakatla village.
Jump aboard the ferry and spend another fabulous night floating through Alaska's Inside Passage.
Disembark at Wrangell, once a trading post for Russian fur-seal merchants and one of the state's oldest European settlements. Take the chance to spot bears, eagles, sea lions, harbor seals and whales by taking a boat trip on the Stikine River.
You know the drill by now – it's back to the boat for another night of cruising.
Arrive in the state capital for three days of free time to explore the city's historical downtown area and numerous hiking trails, and perhaps even the Glacier Bay National Park, which can be reached by plane on a day trip. There's also the chance to check out the Alaska Brewing Company, a side-trip that's guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any serious beer drinker.
Return to the ferry and enter the Gulf of Alaska.
Enjoy a free day in Whittier before making the final push to Anchorage, where this Alaskan adventure ends. Why not stay on for a few days after the trip to explore this surprisingly modern city.
