Discover the treasures of Tunisia with family in tow
The aroma of strong coffee and exotic spices fill the air, elegantly shrouded locals drift their way through shaded souqs and the sparkling Mediterranean shimmers in the distance... welcome to Tunisia. One of North Africa's more travel-friendly destinations, Tunisia often feels more like old-world Arabia than it does Africa – and makes for an enchanting family adventure. Kids (and the young at heart) will get their kicks on camel rides across the Saharan dunes, explorations of ancient Roman amphitheatres and nights spent in traditional Bedouin-style tents. While the museums, mosquem and medinas will provide plenty of opportunity for intercultural interactions. And with a superb tract of the Mediterranean coast right on Sousse's doorstep, there are plenty of chances for beach time too.

Tunisian Family Voyager SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Start this family adventure in a coastal resort brimming with character. After a guided tour learning about Sousse’s place in the history books, take the opportunity to explore the Old Town’s maze of alleyways and stock up on exotic spices at its market stalls. With plenty of free time built in, maybe even enjoy a few hours of beachside bliss on the glorious Mediterranean coastline.
Travel to the amphitheatre of El Djem and recreate life as a gladiator in this incredible Roman setting. Crouch in the dark tunnels alongside ghosts of the past who used to wait here before being released into the arena to entertain thousands of spectators. Leaving the desert behind, head for the hills of Matmata where some Berbers still continue to call the local caves their home. Explore the village best known as being the home of Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker and spend an unforgettable night sleeping underground in a troglodyte hotel.
Head to the edge of the Sahara where it’s time to swap modern transport for something more traditional. The frustrating fun of trying to mount a camel is rewarded by magical views and a true sense of adventure while exploring the famous dunes. Watch the setting sun set the desert ablaze from the comfort of a cosy camp before dining underneath a blanket of stars and spending a peaceful night in a Bedouin tent.
Experience the eerie otherworldliness of Chott el Djerid and keep a look out for optical illusions caused by heat shimmering off the vast salt flats. Initially appearing as a mirage, the palm trees and gentle pace of the desert oasis of Tozeur make it the perfect resting stop for weary travellers.
Spend time wandering through one of Islam’s most holy sites, Kairouan, a city so revered that it is said that seven visits here are equivalent to one to Mecca. Head back to enjoy the mesmerising culture of daily life in Sousse. Before heading home, there’s time to snap up some final bargains in its countless bazaars or simply escape the urban whirlwind with a few hours swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Why not treat the family to a final Tunisian meal before bidding farewell to this remarkable holiday.
