Each of our trips comes with a physical and cultural rating attached. These aren’t comprehensive breakdowns – just handy little guides so you can tell, at a glance, if a trip is right for you. The more stars, the more challenging. Simple.
The physical rating gives you an idea of how much physical exertion is required on a particular trip. The majority of our itineraries are designed for people with an average level of fitness, but there are a few specialist tours (like trekking the Himalayas or cycling through Vietnam) that require a bit of training beforehand.
A rating of 1 = these trips are a relaxing break. You don't have to worry about doing anything physically demanding unless you want to.
A rating of 2 = Some easy physical activities included in your trip. No physical preparation is required to make the most of the journey.
A rating of 3 = This trip will raise your heartbeat. Moderate physical activities are included and a good level of fitness is required.
A rating of 4 = Be prepared for some serious physical activity. The fitter you are, the more you'll enjoy it, as most activities will be challenging.
A rating of 5 = Our highest physical rating. Get ready for a heart-pumping adventure with plenty of challenges and some extreme conditions. You'll be required to be seriously fit for this trip as difficult activities are included.
Most people don’t travel to find a place just like home, but culture shock can be a bit of, well, a shock. The culture rating is all about how must adjusting you’ll have to do – whether there’s familiar food and drink available, the size of the language barrier, general conditions like drop toilets etc. Check your trip notes for more specific info on these factors.
A rating of 1 = This is the least confronting of our product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be similar to home.
A rating of 2 = At times local life here will be familiar to that of back home, and at times very different. Services are available most of the time, English may not be the native language, and there may be some cultural differences.
A rating of 3 = Expect some culture shock. You'll be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.
A rating of 4 = The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English isn't common and the food will be quite different to home. It's important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals’ standard of living may be confronting.
A rating of 5 = You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals’ living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to at home. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there's little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.
