Itinerary

Jambo! Welcome to Tanzania.
Meet the group at Dar es Salaam International airport where you will be transferred to your hotel for the evening, Depending on your arrival time you may have an afternoon to relax. There is a lovely swimming pool and sun terrace plus a great Italian restaurant.
After an early breakfast we transfer by road to Saadani National Park and arrive at Babs' Camp for 3 whole days of amazing safaris and wildlife adventure.
Saadani National Park is located on the northern coast of Tanzania and is the only wildlife sanctuary in the country that borders the sea, offering safari and beach in one location. The unique combination of both marine and mainland flora and fauna makes this destination extra special. On top of that, the park remains relatively unknown, so you can expect to avoid the crowds.
This morning we are up early for a sunrise walking safari on the salt flats of Saadani, Here you will learn about animal spoor and form a story about what went on the night before by studying the various animals behaviour through the mosaic of prints left in the sand. In the afternoon we will learn how to set a camera trap including what to look for in finding the right place to place it. We then have an opportunity to head out with a guide and set our own camera trap and see how successful we can be. In the evening we take a night game drive expecting to come across Bushbabies, Civets and Genets and with a good chance to find the larger predators, lions and leopards active during their favourite hunting period.
Today we leave camp late morning and head quickly down to the Wami River for an amazing boat safari. On the river we would not only expect to find a fantastic variety of bird life and beautiful Colobus monkeys studying us from the trees along the banks but we should also get some fabulous hippo sightings as they raise from their mud wallows on the river banks when the boat approaches. After the boat safari, we will find our way back through the park on a late afternoon game drive in search of Saadani's rich diversity of wildlife.
After breakfast we say goodbye to Babs' Camp and transfer to our new home - Simply Saadani camp, located on the Indian Ocean Coast and surrounded by national park to the North. After settling in to our new base, we take lunch in the sea view restaurant surround by fantastic bush. After lunch, head down to the wildlife research centre where we will learn about the value of camera traps in wildlife research and how to set one. After splitting into groups, we head off with a guide to find the best place to set out camera trap.
After an early breakfast, we take a boat out to a nearby sand bar for snorkelling and swimming.
We will then head back to the lodge for lunch followed by a local canoe (“Mtumbwi”) ride on the lodge’s Mafui creek. Alternatively you may wish to take one of the colour coded nature trails around the lodge grounds with a guide. During the afternoon activities, we will also head off to check your camera traps for any animal activity
This morning we head up to the local fishing village of Mkwaja and visit a hospital supported by the Tent with a view foundation. After lunch we will have a talk on the wildlife conservation projects including elephant collaring in Saadani. Check our camera traps before dinner to see what we have captured.
Today we will spend the morning learning about life as a pastoralist which will include a lecture about the Maasai and their traditions as well as the modern day problems Africa faces from over grazing. We will learn about Maasai clothes, hair and face paint as well as medicinal plants used today. We will have dance lesson and in the evening we have the opportunity to dress up in our Maasai blankets or "Shuka" and joint the traditional Swahili BBQ party on the beach with Maasai dancing.
This morning after breakfast we will travel a short distance to the marine park at Madete to see endangered Green Turtles hatching from their nests on the turtle breeding beach and heading out to sea. After lunch back at the lodge, there will be an afternoon quiz where we split into teams to answer questions on everything learned during the week. This will be great fun and there is also an camera trap competition for the best photo.
n.b the best time for turtle hatching is June through September. If no turtles are hatching, this trip will be replaced with an alternative itinerary. n.b The best time for turtle hatching is June through September.
