About India

Gujarat Adventure Summary

Add to Shortlist

Days 1-2 Mumbai

A city of contradictions and never dull, Mumbai has truly wonderful sights vs the hard to see; incredible cultural depth vs rampant consumerism; immense riches vs crippling poverty.

Day 3 Ahmedabad

While in Ahmedabad, perhaps visit the Gandhi Ashram - which Mahatma Gandhi himself founded in 1915 - or stop in on the symbol of the city, the Sidi Sayed Mosque. Afterwards, come face to face with the most unique Indo-Islamic architecture in the region at Adalaj stepwell.

Day 4 Bhavnagar

On the drive to India’s fifth largest city, stop off at the archaeological site of Lothal, a prominent city from the Bronze Age. Explore the acropolis, baths and citadel before entering the museum, which showcases stunning antiquities.

Days 5-6 Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary

Journey to Palitana to see the ‘City of Temples’. Explore over 800 marble temples at the most sacred site of the Jain community. Then head to Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary. Home to a concentration of big cats, keep your eyes peeled for roaming lions and leopards, as well as crocodiles, hyenas and jackals.

Day 7 Porbandar

En route to Porbandar, meander the brightly tiled floors of Junagarh Fort. Marvel at the lavish interiors and try to imagine what this fort looked like in bygone days, when opulent maharajas ruled supreme. Then stop by some ancient Buddhist caves at a tranquil mountain location.

Days 8-9 Dwarka

Journey into this spiritually enlightened city to explore ancient shrines, lovely temples and quiet beaches before heading to see Gandhi’s house on a city walking tour.

Day 10 Jamnagar

In the engaging wildlife-focused city of Jamnagar, head to the serene Marine National Park or Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary to see the best of the sea and the sky. Perhaps grab a lassi from a street stall and stroll to the town’s lake to watch the sun go down.

Days 11-12 Bhuj

Begin the day with a kutchi pau bhaji, the Indian take on a vegie burger, before wandering the breathtaking Hall of Mirrors at the Aina Mahal. Choose to climb the bell tower next door for an all-encompassing view of the city and take a stroll through the produce market - but be prepared to haggle. In the evening, why not take a turn around Hamirsar Lake before a dinner of vegetable curry, naan and other great Gujarat dishes.

Day 13 Dasada

Visit the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary to spot hundreds of native species. Then, get in touch with the locals of a small village situated on the edge of a huge salt marsh. Sleep overnight in a local hamlet and enjoy the ways of rural living. This is an incredible way to see a lesser-known India - among a humble small town community in a serene natural environment, away from the smog, crowds and bustle of the big cities.

Days 14-15 Ahmedabad

On the road back to Ahmedabad, stop off at the Patan stepwells, a local silk centre and the impressive Modhera Sun Temple. Dedicated to the Hindu sun god, this ancient monument gives insight into a variety of auspicious Hindu practices. Pick up some last-minute souvenirs at the local market in Ahmedabad and dip your hand into a final plate of thali before this Gujarat Adventure comes to an end.
