Day 1 Quito

Arrive in Quito, a city steeped in history and brimming with fascinating colonial architecture. Situated at an altitude of 2,850 m - under the watchful eye of the Pichincha Volcano - Quito stretches along a valley formed by the east and west ranges of the Andes, and is one of the most stunning cities in South America. Wander the cobbled streets, hang out in a charming cafe or get to know the history of this city in one of the many fine museums.

Days 2-3 Cotopaxi

Spot Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world at 5,897 m above sea level, on the way to tonight's overnight stay at a local lodge.

Days 4-5 Banos

In your time in Banos, you might want to watch sunrise from the thermal springs or experience an adrenaline rush high in the Ecuadorian Andes. Banos has long been a favourite place to travel in Ecuador and it's not hard to see why.

Days 6-7 Cuenca

Wander cobblestone streets and admire the red-tiled roofs, flower markets and plazas of Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Days 8-10 Lima

Get acquainted with Lima's historical landmarks and pleasant parks on a guided downtown walking tour. The vibrant suburb of Miraflores, packed with lively bars and atmospheric restaurants, is a great place to wile away evening hours.

Days 11-12 Amazon Jungle

Fly to the frontier town of Puerto Maldonado and travel by canoe into the dense Amazon Jungle. Search for macaws, monkeys, peccaries, jabirus and otters on a nature walk through this amazing ecosystem and learn about the medicinal properties and practical uses of various plants from your local guide.

Days 13-14 Cuzco

Fly into Cuzco, the epicentre of traditional Peruvian culture. A great town to explore on foot, discover the city's colonial churches and museums or make for the ancient Inca ruins peppering the surrounding hillsides.

Day 15 Sacred Valley/Ollantaytambo

Travel through the lushly terraced Sacred Valley, stopping off en route at a local village to gain insight into the lifestyles and customs of Peru's rural population. Head up the ruins of Ollantaytambo for a lesson in Inca urban planning and spectacular views across the landscape.

Day 16 Aguas Calientes

Travel by train to Aguas Calientes, nestled in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Days 17-18 Machu Picchu/Cuzco

Rise early for the chance to watch Machu Picchu's imposing structure emerge from the mist in the morning light. Learn about the site's history on a tour with a local guide, then return to Cuzco for some further time getting to know this charming colonial city.

Days 19-21 Puno/Lake Titicaca

Resting 3,800 m above sea level, Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake. Cruise out to the impressive floating villages on the Uros Islands - a truly novel way of remaining beyond the reach of hostile tribes!

Day 22 La Paz

Built in a canyon, the unique and bewtiching city of La Paz is filled with steep, cobbled streets, fascinating markets, evident tradition and captivating sights.

Days 23-24 Santiago de Chile

With the picturesque Plaza de Armas, thriving cafe culture, eclectic array of shops, booming arts scene and vibrant night-life, Santiago is a fun and rewarding capital to explore.

Days 25-26 Mendoza

Cross over the Andes into Mendoza, Argentina. Learn about local winemaking on a vineyard tour and take the chance to sample some Malbec wine – the region's signature variety. Enjoy laidback afternoons in the plaza cafes of the beautiful city centre, then when the sun goes down head for the lively bars and clubs of Aristides Villanueva street.

Days 27-28 Buenos Aires estancia stay

Head out to a traditional Argentine estancia and learn the skills of a gaucho.

Days 29-31 Buenos Aires

Displaying strong European influences, Buenos Aires is a top spot to shop, dine, drink and celebrate life. Stroll the streets of unique barrios such as colonial San Telmo or Recoleta, home to many interesting museums. The eclectic array of boutiques are an excellent destination for fashionistas and the bars and restaurants will satisfy even the most refined culinary cravings.

Days 32-33 Iguazu Falls

Discover the jaw-dropping magnitude of Iguazu Falls, where tropical flowers, colourful butterflies and misty rainbows all add to the magic of this spectacular destination. The mighty roar of the falls is deafening - prepare yourself for nature at its most powerful! Admire the falls from either the Brazilian or the Argentinean side or, for those wanting a different perspective, zip out on a zodiac at the base to witness the pounding deluge from but a few feet away.

Days 34-36 Rio de Janeiro

There is plenty to see and do in flamboyant, rambunctious Rio de Janeiro. Visit Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado and admire amazing panoramas of the city, or head to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain by cable car. For some seriously eye-popping sights, head down to the white sand beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. And what trip to Rio would be complete without a samba boogie? Yes, the only way to truly experience this city is to try to keep up with it.
