Arrive in Hobart, Tasmania's state capital and Australia's second-oldest city. As this trip departs for the island's west coast early on the first day, consider arriving a few days early to explore the city's attractive waterfront and amazing bar and restaurant scene. Wind through the Derwent Valley to Mt Field National Park and Russell Falls. Stop by Lake St Clair, the country's deepest freshwater lake, before finishing the day off in Strahan with a barbecue dinner.
Explore the sands of the Henty Dunes before continuing into the Tarkine Rainforest and walking to the Montezuma Falls. Alternatively, you could take a cruise on the famous Gordon River, taking in the sights of the Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River
Today we enjoy all that Cradle Mountain has to offer with an extensive range of tracks, you will be able to take it easy with a stroll around Dove Lake or one of the many boardwalk tracks, or perhaps challenge yourself with a hike to Marion’s Lookout. Continue though to Launceston for your overnight stop.
Set off from Launceston for Tasmania's east coast and its astoundingly beautiful Bay of Fires. Take a stroll along the beach's chalky white sands or perhaps take a dip in the ocean. It won't be the warmest swim you've ever taken, but the aquamarine waters are really quite inviting. Soak up the dazzling scenery along the island's most spectacular coastal drive from St Helens to Bicheno and, season depending, witness penguins waddle into shore come evening.
Rise early to beat the crowds and score unspoilt views out over Wineglass Bay. Choose to explore the gorgeous Freycinet region via its walking trails or simply bliss out shoreside. Meet the famously tenacious, but now sadly endangered, Tasmanian devil at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and learn about the fate threatening this species. Return to Hobart for the night.
Get a sense of Australia's colonial heritage on a visit to the well preserved village of Richmond. Continue trawling back through history with a visit to Port Arthur, learning about the nation's convict history on a guided walk around this World Heritage-listed site.
