6 Day Taste of Tasmania (Hobart to Hobart) SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Head west out of Hobart through the Derwent Valley. Be dwarfed by gargantuan trees in the Land of the Giants and soak up the otherworldly serenity of Russell Falls. Explore the craggy mountain peaks, dense rainforest and spectacular gorges of Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
Stroll along the windswept expanse of Ocean Beach and the Henty Sand Dunes, perhaps coming across submerged whale bones. Wander the harbour's foreshore, follow rainforest tracks to a waterfall or sign up for a scenic seaplane flight over the Gordon and Franklin river systems – how you elect to spend your day is up to you.
Enter Cradle Mountain National Park – arguably Tasmania's leading tourist attraction. Choose between a large number of hiking trails in exploring this pristine wilderness, keeping eyes peeled for wallabies, wombats and possibly even the iconic Tasmanian devil. Stop by Sheffield, ‘the town of murals’, on the drive to Launceston.
After a walk down to Cataract Gorge, cross through to the east coast and the Bay of Fires. With boulders streaked orange with lichen, waters a crystalline blue and superb sands of a pink white, this is one seriously picturesque stretch of coastline. Soak up more stunning scenery on the drive from St Helens to Bicheno, then maybe head out to watch the little penguins waddle into shore from their daily fishing.
Rise early for the chance to catch unpeopled views out over Wineglass Bay. Choose to make the most of your time in Freycinet with a walk along Hazzards Beach or up Mt Amos, or just lounge the hours away on shimmering white sands – there's no bad option here. Get your fill of berries with a stopover at a berry farm and come face-to-face with Tasmanian devils on a visit to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.
Amble the quaint streets of Richmond, one of the best preserved colonial villages in Australia. Then get a glimpse of the country's less wholesome history on a guided tour of the World Heritage convict settlement, Port Arthur. This small group adventure ends upon arrival back in Hobart.
