Spitsbergen Explorer (Sea Adventurer) 2015 SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Begin this Arctic adventure in Svalbard’s largest settlement. Situated at the base of a valley, the town is known for its spectacular surroundings and mountainous backdrop blending with the deep blue of the Arctic Ocean.
Succumb to the mystique of the Arctic as you explore the nooks and crannies of Spitsbergen. This is the largest island in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago and is home to spectacular rugged landscapes and a treasure trove of wildlife. Each day, embark on expeditions around the island, from vast rocky coasts and silent fjords to tundra filled with colourful wildflowers. Hike the stunning 14th July Glacier, discover the ghost towns of early whaling stations in Smeerenburg and watch for prowling polar bears on the ice sheets of Phippsoya. Be on the look out for Arctic foxes, walruses, whales and a rich array of seabirds such as barnacle geese and snow buntings. Spitsbergen is known as the wildlife capital of the Arctic and an astonishing bouquet of animal life waits at every turn. There is no fixed schedule for these eight days; weather conditions are highly changeable, but each day is packed with possibilities for adventure, whether it’s walrus-spotting on the coast of Torellneset, venturing snowshoe-clad inland to Ny-London or taking a sea kayak to seek out remote coves.
This Arctic expedition draws to a close in the place it began, in the quirky, colourful town of Longyearbyen.
