East Greenland Explorer ( Ocean Nova ) 2015 SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Arrive in Reykjavik and spend the day exploring the charms and contrasts of the city. From the volcanic surroundings to the energetic night-life, there’s plenty to love about the world’s northernmost capital city.
After a leisurely morning spent wandering among the colourful buildings and cosy cafes of Reykjavik, head to the port where the ship is waiting. Climb aboard and settle in to life on the water as you begin the journey to mysterious Greenland.
As the expedition vessel continues on through the Denmark Strait, get your first taste of wildlife by watching for seabirds above and whales below. Now is a great time to soak up the knowledge of the expedition team, listening to the fascinating presentations about Greenland’s wildlife, history and geography.
Lose yourself in the fjords and flower meadows of Greenland National Park, where Arctic foxes and musk oxen roam free. This is the largest national park in the world, and a wealth of sumptuous beauty awaits. Hike the berry-strewn tundra of Holm Bay, zodiac cruise through the breathtaking Alepfjord or climb to the top of Ella Island. It’s a challenging hike, but the views at the top are certainly worth the effort.
Sail through the spectacular Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system in the world. Palaces of icebergs, towering mountains and ancient Thule settlements reawaken the senses as you navigate the crystalline waters. Drop by Ittoqqortoormitt, one of the world’s last remaining hunter-gatherer societies, to get to know Inuit culture and traditions. If the sky is clear, perhaps be treated to the dazzling display of the Northern Lights – something to cross off any bucket list. Deeper into Scoresbysund at Cape Hofmann Halvo, keep eyes peeled for rare blue icebergs (normally seen in the Antarctic) and be delighted by musk oxen grazing on the colourful tundra.
Journey back over the Denmark Strait and enjoy a final few days at sea. Watch for seabirds from the deck, and see if you can spot dolphins, humpback whales and minke whales playing in the icy waters alongside the ship.
This Greenland adventure comes to an end on arrival in Reykjavik.
