This was the trip that started it all for Intrepid, and it remains one of our most popular. Northern Thailand is one of the greatest adventure destinations on the planet and we make the most of it - among the hilltribes, on the rivers and in the villages - so come along and see why this has become the benchmark for all our other journeys.

Days 1-2 Bangkok
Trade busy streets for lively waterways and take a longtail cruise down the Chao Praya River to discover Bangkok's cultural treasures. See all 46 m of the tremendous Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho before lunch at the floating markets.
Days 3-4 Kanchanaburi
Visit the Jeath War Museum before heading to the Erawan National Park for a swim beneath the seven-tiered waterfall. There's a chance to kayak back to town, paddling under the infamous Bridge on the River Kwai.
Day 5 Ayuthaya
Ancient Ayuthaya, one of the former capitals of Siam, is a temple lover's dream. Highlights include the ultra-photogenic Wat Phra Mahatha and Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, where it's possible to have your fortune told.
Days 6-7 Chiang Mai
Ride domesticated elephants through a national park. There's time afterwards to drift downriver on bamboo rafts, enjoy a traditional massage or live the shopaholic's dream at the night market.
Day 8 Homestay
Experience village life on an overnight stay with Intrepid's long-time friends. Tonight, enjoy a khan toke dinner accompanied by dance performances by the local school kids.
Days 9-11 Hilltribe Trek
Hike through remote villages and discover the diversity of local customs and traditions, staying overnight in simple hilltribe huts. Trek through rural terrains and see rice and other crops growing on the slops of the hilly countryside.
Days 12-13 Golden Triangle
Call in at Mae Sai, full of colourful shops stacked with Chinese goods, on the way to the Golden Triangle. The junction of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar has finally left behind its chequered past. Dine at a restaurant on the banks of the Mekong River. Visit the Opium Museum for an insight into everything poppy or take a fast boat down the Mekong. Chiang Rai boasts a great night market which is the perfect spot for an after-dinner wander before jumping onto an overnight train back to the capital.
Days 14-15 Bangkok
There's time to see the sights before bidding Thailand goodbye. Check out the extensive weekend market at Chatuchak, visit Jim Thompson's house or soak up the sights and smells of Chinatown.
