Days 1-8 Lucca
The lovely walled city of Lucca is a base for explorations of Tuscany, a delightful region known for its good food and wines, magnificent medieval cities, fine museums, and lovely countryside. Stay in a comfortable apartment within the city ramparts, a short walk away from the major sights and eateries. With a fully-equipped kitchen, you'll even be able to whip up your own meal, perhaps with food bought from a local delicatessen. Why not kickstart your Tuscan adventure with a cycle around Lucca's city walls, then a wander through the cobbled piazzas, charming churches and centuries-old buildings within. The city of Lucca buzzes with sidewalk cafes and chic boutiques to explore, as well as historic sights of interest. Be sure to visit the church of San Michele in Foro to admire the ornate columns that make up its facade - every single one is unique. Another great idea is to head out and see the famed rolling hills and open fields of the Tuscan countryside. From Lucca, day trips further afield are possible. Why not visit artistic Florence to take a stroll through the Uffizi Gallery and Medici Chapels, or beautiful Siena to see the main piazza, presided over by the elegant Torre del Mangia belltower? Also reachable by train is Pisa, with its quirky Leaning Tower, and the renowned coastal walk between the pretty pastel villages of the Cinque Terre. At the end of each day, be sure to indulge in Tuscan specialties, noted for their simplicity and fine flavour, and the use of high-quality olive oil, cannellini beans and fresh herbs.

On 07 June the Australian Government issued an updated travel warning for East Timor strongly advising against travel to East Timor because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Australians in the country are advised to leave. The Travel Warning remains at Category 5 - Do Not Travel.
On Tuesday 07 June we have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of our East Timor trips scheduled to depart in 2006. All travellers will be notified and given the opportunity to transfer to another trip or obtain a full refund (land content only). We very much regret having to take this action and our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of East Timor during this troubled time.
We are confident of being able to resume our normal schedule of trips to East Timor in 2007 and hope that those travellers who have had to cancel their plans this year will travel with us to East Timor in 2007.
