This classic trek is the most popular route, and the only one serviced by mountain huts to keep you well protected from the elements. It’s the most direct route to the summit and covers the 67 km trail in just 5 days . Although it can be busy, the route is well maintained and is a fabulous trek to the spectacular summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.

If you would like to start or end the trip in Nairobi please request a transfer (at an additional cost) when booking this trip.
Please check the "Health" section of these trip notes as Tanzania has just toughened its Yello Fever vaccination policy and all travellers arriving by plane from endemic areas (this includes flying in from Naorobi) must produce a vacination certificate or pay to be imunised at the airport.
At this stage this does not seem to apply to travellers arriving overland.

The animals are going to look pretty small from on top of Africa's highest mountain but you can get up close and personal with them by adding your climb to our Serengeti Trail itinerary for the toal Africa experience. (YOS)
Day 1 Kilimanjaro Airport/ Marangu
Admire the cloud-covered summit of tomorrow's challenge - Mt Kilimanjaro.
Day 2 Mandara Hut
Enticing bird calls and glimpses of different types of monkeys make this rainforest walk incredibly rewarding.
Day 3 Horombo Hut
Get muscles pumping on a trek to Horombo Hut and spend the night in the shadow of twin snow-tipped peaks.
Day 4 Kibo Hut
Hike through hauntingly beautiful moorland forests of hanging moss and skirt the stark moonscape of the Saddle to reach Kibo Hut.
Day 5 Summit
At midnight, zig-zag up a scree slope by lamplight and pass along the rim of a crater to get up to the highest point in Africa. The views from here are unforgettable and so is the sense of achievement as you look down over ice fields and distant plains.
Days 6-7 Marangu/ Kilimanjaro Airport
Descend through alpine meadows and rainforest.

The Trip Notes provide you with detailed information about your trip.
This is where you will find everything you need to know... from what's included to suggestions about what to take. This is also where you will find the most up-to-date itinerary and any late changes.
The Trip Notes provide you with a detailed outline of your trip itinerary, and important information like where to meet your group, what to pack, what's included, estimates of spending money requirements and much more. They make great reading.
These documents have been prepared by Intrepid staff to give you a brief introduction to the places you are visiting. We think it's important to understand the culture you are visiting, and the expectations of their society.
Intrepid is committed to a style of travel that is environmentally, culturally and socially responsible - we call this 'Responsible Travel'. Download this document and visit the About Intrepid section of this site for more information about how to be a Responsible Traveller.
Please also read our safety guidelines for further information on the operational safety standards you can expect on every Intrepid trip.
On 07 June the Australian Government issued an updated travel warning for East Timor strongly advising against travel to East Timor because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Australians in the country are advised to leave. The Travel Warning remains at Category 5 - Do Not Travel.
On Tuesday 07 June we have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of our East Timor trips scheduled to depart in 2006. All travellers will be notified and given the opportunity to transfer to another trip or obtain a full refund (land content only). We very much regret having to take this action and our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of East Timor during this troubled time.
We are confident of being able to resume our normal schedule of trips to East Timor in 2007 and hope that those travellers who have had to cancel their plans this year will travel with us to East Timor in 2007.
For other safety updates, please see our general safety updates page.

The trip was fantastic, and we managed to see so much in the 2 weeks. Much more than I ever expected.

The trip was excellent. The only thing we were dissapointed in was post trip transportation. Because we we're not immidiately flying out after the trip the cost of transportation to the nearest town was not "covered" by intrepid. To improve this I suggest trying to accomodate overland travelers as well by providing transportation to the nearest town after the trip (equivalent in cost to Kilimanjaro airport)

I thought this trip was fantastic. The people who run the Marangu hotel were lovely and really helpful and informative. The tour leader himself was amazing and without him, we would never had reached the top of Kili. We saw a few cowboy outfits out there and were extremely pleased that we had chosen to book our trip through Intrepid Guerba.
