Enjoy a relaxing extension to an African adventure with a visit to idyllic Ile Ste Marie, an island lined with sandy palm-fringed beaches and home to wonderfully friendly people, breathtakingly beautiful coral reefs and a rich, interesting history. The Betsimisaraka tribal group that inhabits this island are of mulatto descent, living testimony to the country's role as a pirate's haven. The island was ceded to the French and used as a penal colony until Independence in 1960. These influences have resulted in a well-rounded cuisine, colourful culture and delightful language - all which you can discover for yourself on this six-day beach break!

It's a long way to come to the beach without experiencing all that Madagascar has to offer on our Madagascan Explorer itinerary. (YSY)
Day 1 Antananarivo
Spend a free afternoon exploring 'Tana', Madagascar's charming capital. Stroll through the vibrant street markets browsing for fresh fruit, hand-woven silks and handmade paper. If there's time, climb up to the ruins of Rova, the former Queen's Palace, for a great view over the city. This evening, why not get your first taste of delicious Malagasy fare in one of the city's many eateries? Steak frites is a favourite, as is romazava, a beef-and-vegetable stew.
Days 2-5 Ile Ste Marie
Take a flight to Ile Ste Marie, a tiny island often referred to as the Garden Island for its lush forests of exotic orchids, spices and tropical fruit trees. Its pristine beaches, secluded bays and turquoise waters played a part in the country's rich history of pirates, adventurers and shipwrecks and offer the perfect setting to get away from it all. Time here is spent completely at leisure so sunbake, swim or search for sunken treasure amongst the coral reefs gleaming beneath the water's surface. For something a little different hire a bike to cycle across the island. Humpback whales glide across the channel between Ile Ste Marie and Madagascar between July and September so if you're here during this time consider chartering a boat to view these magical creatures on their journey to warmer waters. On land, paths lead into the island's luxurious vegetation, passing through the homelands of iconic lemurs, quirky chameleons and myriad multi-coloured birds.
Day 6 Antananarivo
Take a final early morning trek or an invigorating dip before boarding a plane bound for Antananarivo Airport.

On 07 June the Australian Government issued an updated travel warning for East Timor strongly advising against travel to East Timor because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Australians in the country are advised to leave. The Travel Warning remains at Category 5 - Do Not Travel.
On Tuesday 07 June we have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of our East Timor trips scheduled to depart in 2006. All travellers will be notified and given the opportunity to transfer to another trip or obtain a full refund (land content only). We very much regret having to take this action and our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of East Timor during this troubled time.
We are confident of being able to resume our normal schedule of trips to East Timor in 2007 and hope that those travellers who have had to cancel their plans this year will travel with us to East Timor in 2007.
