Day 1 Hanoi
Shaded boulevards, public parks and blocks of ochre buildings are telling remainders of a French colonial past, but Hanoi hums with the bustle of a modern city.
Day 2 Vinh
Spend a night in the border town of Vinh, checking out the market for fresh Vietnamese dinner options.
Days 3-4 Vientiane
Slow down to the pace of sleepy Vientiane, where the morning market stays open all day and dusty riverside paths are packed with friendly children, dogs and chickens. A great way to round off a day of sightseeing is by dining at one of the many stilt restaurants set up on the Mekong.
Days 5-7 Vang Vieng
Be wowed by the gorgeous setting of Vang Vieng, surrounded by stunning limestone karst mountains. Relax in a chilled-out cafe or dive into the river to escape the heat.
Days 8-10 Luang Prabang
The jewel in charming Laos' crown, Luang Prabang is bursting at the seams with temples small and large. Climb to the top of Mt Phousi at sunset for magical views over the town or hop onto a songthaew to visit the gorgeous Kuang Si falls.
Day 11 Pak Beng/ Mekong River
Float gently down the Mekong on a 2 day riverboat journey, travelling with local passengers and docking at tiny Pak Beng for the night.
Day 12 Huay Xai/ Mekong River
Explore the tiny village of Huay Xai and maybe take a stroll out into the surrounding countryside for a glimpse of Laos rural life.
Days 13-14 Chiang Mai
Home to over 300 temples and a massive night market, Chiang Mai has plenty to see and do. Indulge in a traditional Thai massage, take a lesson at a cooking school or even learn the secrets of kick-boxing.

These documents have been prepared by Intrepid staff to give you a brief introduction to the places you are visiting. We think it's important to understand the culture you are visiting, and the expectations of their society.
Intrepid is committed to a style of travel that is environmentally, culturally and socially responsible - we call this 'Responsible Travel'. Download this document and visit the About Intrepid section of this site for more information about how to be a Responsible Traveller.
Please also read our safety guidelines for further information on the operational safety standards you can expect on every Intrepid trip.
On 07 June the Australian Government issued an updated travel warning for East Timor strongly advising against travel to East Timor because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Australians in the country are advised to leave. The Travel Warning remains at Category 5 - Do Not Travel.
On Tuesday 07 June we have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of our East Timor trips scheduled to depart in 2006. All travellers will be notified and given the opportunity to transfer to another trip or obtain a full refund (land content only). We very much regret having to take this action and our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of East Timor during this troubled time.
We are confident of being able to resume our normal schedule of trips to East Timor in 2007 and hope that those travellers who have had to cancel their plans this year will travel with us to East Timor in 2007.
For other safety updates, please see our general safety updates page.

The experience of this travel through Laos was indeed a magical feeling. Having travelled together with other backpackers would not have been possible if it weren't planned beforehand with Intrepid! many thanks for making our trip a memorable one!!!

This is the fifth trip I have made with Intrepid - they just get better and better. What a great leader! What a great group of fellow travellers! Laos has to be the pick of SE Asian countries. More peaceful, more remote and more untouched by the ravages of development and tourism. Highly recommended by one who knows!
