Day 1 Varanasi
Varanasi encapsulates the best of colourful India. Hinduism's holiest city sprawls along the banks of the river Ganges in a maze of narrow alleyways.
Day 2 Sunrise boat trip/ Sarnath
Take a boat ride on the Ganges when it is at its atmospheric best - at sunrise. Shrouded in mist and flooded in golden light, the bathing ghats come alive as thousands of devotees perform puja to the rising sun. Spend the afternoon at the ruins of Sarnath, where Buddha performed his first sermon.
Days 3-4 Varanasi
Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore the city of Varanasi independently. This is one the world's most ancient places, and the old city is a colourful maze of winding streets and alleys filled with fascinating shops and local characters.

On 07 June the Australian Government issued an updated travel warning for East Timor strongly advising against travel to East Timor because of the extremely dangerous security situation. Australians in the country are advised to leave. The Travel Warning remains at Category 5 - Do Not Travel.
On Tuesday 07 June we have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of our East Timor trips scheduled to depart in 2006. All travellers will be notified and given the opportunity to transfer to another trip or obtain a full refund (land content only). We very much regret having to take this action and our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of East Timor during this troubled time.
We are confident of being able to resume our normal schedule of trips to East Timor in 2007 and hope that those travellers who have had to cancel their plans this year will travel with us to East Timor in 2007.

You can't 'do' India without doing Varanasi - it epitomises the essential India. However, this extension is one day too long. The location of our hotel on the Assi Ghat and our guide's exortions not to walk aorund the area after dark due to danger left us in limbo re meals and entertainment.

What we did was fine.
But we only had two half-days of organized activity in 3 days in Varanasi - could have done with at least another day of organized activity PLUS some guidance on other oppotunities
