Cycling in Tanzania

Day 1 Arusha

Arrive in Tanzania’s lively Arusha, situated under the watchful eye of Mt Meru. Perhaps explore the city centre, people-watch in a cafe or lie by the pool and adjust to ‘Africa time’.

Day 2 Meserani

Cycle through coffee and banana plantations before reaching the Monduli Mountains, witnessing the area’s black cotton earth as the bike wheels roll by. Weave through small valleys and Maasai villages while cycling to the foothills before descending into our camp at the famed Snake Park.

Day 3 Rift Valley

Weave along an old tarmac road to the village of Selelai, getting to see the Rift Valley wall and shining Lake Manyara in the distance. Perhaps even encounter a giraffe, elephant or ostrich along the way. Camp on the edge of a mountain, which we hike up the next morning with a Maasai guide. Learn the medicinal uses of local plants during this engaging encounter. After lunch, cycle to a Maasai homestead and spend a fascinating afternoon learning about their lives.

Day 5 Mto Wa Mbu

Take to two wheels and cycle across the rift to the village of Mto wa Mbu. Keep an eye out for wildlife and wave to colourful locals while passing their homesteads.

Day 6 Ngorongoro Crater

Jump into a safari vehicle and descend to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater to see lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino and maybe even a leopard. The crater is home to over 30,000 animals and at times it is hard to move the vehicle due to the sheer numbers of wildebeest and zebra in the way. Camp on the crater’s rim and enjoy a spectacular sunset and unparalleled views.

Day 7 Serengeti National Park

Marvel at the ancient Olduvai Gorge where the remains of some of man’s earliest ancestors have been found. Drive towards Naabi Hill and cross into one of the most famous reserves in the world, the Serengeti. From expansive grassy plains to lush waterholes, the Serengeti is teeming with animals and unsurpassed beauty. Try to spot the Big Five while on safari and camp within the park under a blanket of stars.

Day 9 Wasso

Cycle from the gate of the Serengeti along dusty roads, coloured by animals and Maasai tribespeople, to camp near the town of Wasso.

Day 10 Lake Natron

See Songo tribesmen, clad in bright orange, tending their herds and enjoy a thrilling yet challenging descent to Lake Natron. Camp by the lake, spot colourful flamingos, pelicans and egrets, and spend a relaxing day in nature – perhaps cooling off in a nearby waterfall.

Day 12 Arusha

See the foothills and open plains roll by on the way back to Arusha. Pick up some souvenirs or relax poolside while reliving stories from this amazing African cycling adventure.
