Add to ShortlistDays 1-2 Sigiriya/Dambulla
Built as a royal citadel on top of a 200m high rock mass, Sigiriya is an impressive fortress with some fantastic views, glorious water gardens and 5th-century frescoes.
Dambulla's most famous attraction is a beautifully preserved complex of cave temples, which contain paintings and ancient Buddha statues, some carved from the solid rock.
Day 3 Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa was the ancient capital of the Indian Chola Dynasty and its 1000-year-old remains feature beautiful palaces, temples, stupas and massive stone Buddhas.
Day 4 Matale Region
The jungle gives way to plantations in Sri Lanka's central spice-growing region - the renowned spice gardens of Matale are among the best in the country.
Days 5-6 Kandy
Sri Lanka's culture capital, Kandy is a pleasant city surrounded by lush green countryside - it's home to a picturesque lake, old shops, a bustling market and some great restaurants.
Day 7 Nuwara Eliya
Nestled in Sri Lanka's enchanting hill country, Nuwara Eliya was favoured by the British colonialists, both for its temperate climate and the fine tea which is produced in the region.
Day 8 Ella
Ella is a sleepy highland village with some spectacular scenery - on a clear day you can see the coast shimmering in the distance from the famous viewpoint at Ella Gap.
Days 9-10 Tissamaharama/Yala National Park
The capital of the old Ruhuna Kingdom, Tissamaharama is a charming town on the shores of Lake Tissa - a beautiful location with abundant birdlife.
Encompassing a variety of diverse ecosystems, Yala National Park has an impressive array of wildlife including elephants, leopards, sloth bears and lots of birds.
Days 11-12 Ahangama
A small fishing village on the south-west coast, Ahangama is famous for its stilt fishermen who wait poised on their poles for the day's catch to swim by.
Days 13-14 Galle/Colombo
Used by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British during its colourful history, the port town of Galle features an impressive Dutch fort with extensive walls containing many interesting buildings.
Sri Lanka's commercial heart, Colombo is a cosmopolitan mix of vibrant street markets, colonial buildings, interesting museums, fine restaurants and great shopping opportunities.
