Day 1 Cape Town

Boasting vineyards, adventure activities, restaurants and attractions both in and around the city - Cape Town is a delight. It is also the perfect place to kick off the ultimate overland tour of Africa!

Days 2-3 Western Cape/Orange River

Spend a night on a farm then cross into Namibia to camp on the banks of the Orange River.

Day 4 Fish River Canyon

Travel to Fish River Canyon in time for a spectacular sunset over the surrounding region.

Days 5-6 Sesriem/Bush Camp

Climb to the top of one of the world's highest sand dunes in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Wake early to witness sunrise over the golden dunes.

Days 7-9 Swakopmund

Enjoy adventure activities in Swakopmund, an oasis between the desert and the beach.

Day 10 Spitzkoppe

View thousands of seals basking on the shores of Cape Cross before gazing at the wonder of the rocky Spitzkoppe.

Days 11-12 Etosha National Park

From big carnivores to over 340 bird species, there's plenty to spot on this adventure into vast Etosha park, one of the largest national parks in Africa.

Day 13 Grootfontein/San Bushmen

Head out tracking and gathering with the San Bushmen perhaps picking up a few words of their local 'clicking' language.

Days 14-15 Rundu/Bagani Community Camp

Travel onwards to Rundu then on to the vast swamps of Bagani.

Days 16-17 Okavango Delta

Make tracks for the expansive Okavango Delta in Botswana. Explore the maze of reed beds and waterways onboard a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe.

Day 18 Bagani Community Camp

Relax in laidback Bagani and perhaps enjoy some of the optional activities, including boat tours, fishing and hiking.

Days 19-20 Chobe National Park

Try to spy swimming elephants, wallowing hippos or sun-loving crocs on a cruise along the Chobe River.

Days 21-23 Victoria Falls

Travel across to Zimbabwe and head to Victoria Falls. Admire the might of the thundering falls, a fitting finale to this epic African adventure.

Day 24 Hwange National Park

Learn about the plight of the endangered African wild dog at the Painted Dog Conservation Group. Travel into Hwange National Park to look for elephants and other wildlife on exciting game drives.

Days 25-26 Bulawayo

Enjoy time relaxing in the city of Bulawayo then venture into the Matobo National Park, home to a large population of black and white rhinos. Take a walking safari to track these rare beasts on foot.

Day 27 Masvingo

Explore ancient ruins thought to have once been a palace for Zimbabwean royalty.

Day 28 Harare

Relax amid the gardens and galleries of Harare city.

Days 29-30 Blantyre/Lilongwe

Soak up Malawian culture in the capital Lilongwe. Relax in cafes and restaurants or wander through markets and shops.

Days 31-32 Lake Malawi

Kick back on the peaceful shores of Lake Malawi. Indulge in the many optional water activities on offer and be sure to take the opportunity to meet the locals - Malawians are some of the friendliest people in Africa.

Days 33-34 Chitimba/Iringa

Forge through the green highlands and pitch camp in the grounds of a local farmhouse. Travel back across the plains into Tanzania.

Day 35 Dar es Salaam

Visit Mikumi National Park spotting elephants, buffaloes and giraffes. Camp on a tropical beach outside Dar es Salaam.

Days 36-38 Zanzibar

Plunge into the sensuous delights of Tanzania's tropical playground, Zanzibar, exploring historic Stone Town, touring fragrant spice plantations and lounging under coconut palms beside the Indian Ocean.

Day 39 Dar es Salaam

Return to Dar es Salaam for more beach camping.

Day 40 Marangu

Spend a night amid acres of beautiful tropical gardens in Marangu.

Day 41 Mto Wa Mbu

Meet the Chagga people, sample traditional food and learn about the life of these crop-growers on a visit to the Mt Kilimanjaro village of Mshiri. Afterwards, head to Mto Wa Mbu for the night.

Days 42-43 Ngorongoro Crater/Serengeti National Park

Descend to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater to see an abundance of wildlife including lions, leopards, zebras and rhinos. Then head to the wilds of the Serengeti to embark on thrilling safari drives.

Day 44 Arusha

Peruse the craft market of Mto Wa Mbu and admire the colourful fabrics, crafts and wood carvings on offer. Spend the night in Arusha.

Day 45 Nairobi

Take a break from the road and kick back in cosmopolitan Nairobi. As the epicentre for arts and crafts from the surrounding region, Nairobi is a concentration of African culture and has a lively restaurant and nightlife scene to match.

Days 46-48 Nairobi

Spend three days with free time in Nairobi, exploring at your own pace and taking in the cosmopolitan delights of the capital. Rest and recuperate before rejoining an Intrepid group to continue the African adventure.

Day 49 Nairobi

Meet new friends and get to know an experienced Intrepid leader as you prepare for the next leg of your African journey.

Day 50 Lake Naivasha

Relax beside Lake Naivasha and watch hippos wallowing on the shore.

Days 51-52 Lake Nakuru

A favourite spot with birdlife, Lake Nakuru is a shimmering sea of pink flamingos. Listen for the chatter of black and white colobus monkeys in the treetops above.

Day 53 Mt Kenya

Travel through stunning scenery on the way to the slopes of Mt Kenya.

Days 54-55 Samburu National Reserve

Witness traditional Samburu dancing, and learn about tribal life and customs from the locals. Venture into this vast reserve to try and spot Africa's iconic Big Five.

Days 56-57 Marsabit/Moyale

Traverse a surreal, black lunar landscape and pass spectacular craters and termite mounds on the drive to Ethiopia.

Pick up a souvenir at the local market or perhaps take time to admire the traditional houses in the area.

Days 60-62 Omo Valley

The colourful markets and villages are a delight to explore in Ethiopia's picturesque Omo Valley. Meet friendly tribespeople and learn about their fascinating culture.

Days 63-64 Arba Minch

In free time, why not cycle around scenic landscapes, embark on a boat trip or visit a crocodile farm.

Days 65-66 Wendo Genet/Awasa

Recuperate travel-weary bodies in the hot springs of Wendo Gennet, encased in a beautiful panorama with a rich endowment of forest, wildlife and abundant water. Head to Awassa the following day, a city nestled on the shores of a great lake, and home to the Awassa Children's Project, which promotes AIDS prevention.

Days 67-69 Bale Mountains National Park

Venture out on game-spotting expeditions in this stunningly diverse park.

Day 70 Lake Abiata-Shala National Park

The natural habitat of the Lake Abiata-Shala National Park is an ornothological paradies with an astounding array of birdlife year-round.

Days 71-73 Addis Ababa

Visit Ethiopia's bustling capital, Addis Ababa, and indulge in spicy, traditional cuisine at a local restaurant or cafe.

Day 74 Dejen

Visit the Blue Nile Gorge en route to Dejen.

Board a reed boat bound for the ornately decorated monasteries on Lake Tana's isolated islands and peninsulas.

Journey through the rolling Ethiopian countryside and camp beneath the stars.

Day 82 Mekele

Admire the clusters of churches sculpted into caves and a dramatic cliff-face in Tigray.

Get acquainted with the once-mighty city of Aksum, and discover its towering ancient obelisks, crumbling palaces and web of underground tombs.

Day 85 Enda Selassie

Wind through the Ethiopian countryside on the way to one of the country's greatest natural habitats.

Days 86-89 Simien Mountains National Park

Ethiopia's stunning Simien Mountains are home to a wealth of animals. Hike through the rugged terrain and pass eroded volcanic cores, raging rivers and jagged peaks.

Days 90-92 Gonder

Discover the castles, churches and palaces of Gonder, often referred to as 'Africa's Camelot' - a grand way to end this Ethiopian Explorer adventure.

Cross the border into Sudan and camp amongst the changing landscapes.

Days 94-95 Khartoum

Brush up on some Arabic language skills with the friendly residents of Khartoum city, Sudan's busy capital. Relax in a chai house and get ready to start this epic trip through North Africa.

Days 96-97 Meroe

Admire the spectacular pyramids of Meroe, explore Naqa's Lion Temple and wander through the palace of Musawwarat.

Days 98-101 Nubian Desert

Follow a camel route through the rugged terrain of the Nubian Desert passing oases, small Nile hamlets and ancient relics of past civilisations. In the evening, share a simple meal around the campfire and sleep under the stars as nomadic locals pass by.

Days 102-103 Wadi Halfa

Take in the the last of Sudan's desert scenery on the journey to Wadi Halfa. There's a free day here so perhaps explore the town, wander by the shores of Lake Nasser or sit in the main square sipping tea, people watching and eating fuul (beans) or fried Nile perch.

Day 104 Overnight Ferry

Embark on an epic ferry adventure across Lake Nasser, an enormous man-made lake. Glimpse spectacular scenery en route to the port of Wadi Halfa at Sudan's northern tip and make the crossing into Egypt.

Days 105-108 Aswan

Travel north to Aswan and unwind with a stroll along the Nile River, or take a relaxing felucca cruise followed by a sunset cocktail. See a giant, unfinished obelisk, haggle for souvenirs and treasures in the souq or take a trip to see the two magnificent temples of Abu Simbel.

Days 109-112 Luxor

The ancient Egyptian capital of Luxor houses spectacular temples and tombs. Ride a donkey to the remarkable Valley of the Kings and visit the Temples of Karnak with an Egyptologist.

Day 113 El Kharga Oasis

Drive through endless dessert scenery to reach El Kharga Oasis. There are many sites of antiquity to explore, more notably the Temple of Hebes and the Bagawaat Necropolis. Perhaps take a camel ride around the oasis or explore the springs close by. Camp under a sea of stars.

Day 114 Dakhla Oasis

Perhaps head out on an overnight camel safari to camp by hot springs or explore the palm groves and Coptic antiquities at the Dakhla Oasis.

Day 115 White Desert Bush Camp

Relax in the morning or further explore the area before heading to the White Desert bush camp for another glorious night sleeping under the star-filled skies.

Day 116 Bahariya Oasis

Spend the day exploring the White and Black deserts, visiting Crystal Mountain and discovering the gold mummies that are housed in the fascinating museum here.

Days 117-120 Cairo

Explore the iconic Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza and the sprawling Saqqara cemetery with a local guide. There's also time to see precious, ancient treasures housed in the Egyptian Museum. Celebrate the end of a remarkable trip by exploring the markets in Cairo and picking up souvenirs.
