Day 1 Cuzco

Once the heart of the Inca empire, Cuzco presents an intriguing mix of Spanish colonial-style architecture, weathered Inca ruins and imposing baroque churches. Unravel the city's history and adjust to its altitude by exploring the cobblestone streets, museums and monuments, or by popping down to the central market for some souvenir shopping. Manned by Quechua-speaking Inca descendants, it's a great spot to pick up some alpaca goods, colourful Andean handicrafts or even a couple of lucky charms for your trek.

Days 2-5 Inca Trail/Machu Picchu/Cuzco

Embark on the historic Inca Trail hike, a demanding four-day journey, well rewarded with views of amazing natural scenery and ancient ruins. Trek over mountain passes, waking each morning to breathtaking vistas that will inspire an appreciation for the diversity of Peru's terrain. Rise early on the final morning and climb the steps to the Sun Gate. Watching the ruins of Machu Picchu unfold in front of you is an unforgettable spectacle and will make even the sorest of muscles a distant memory. Spend the day exploring this huge archaeological site before relaxing on the return trip to Cuzco.

Day 6 Cuzco

With the Inca Trail conquered, it's well worth spending a few extra days in Cuzco to soak up more Inca culture and history. Perhaps take to the surrounding hills by mountain bike or join one of the many jungle adventure tours that depart from this city. With lively markets, endlessly winding narrow streets and a vibrant night scene backed by the Andes, Cuzco is a unique place to visit.
