Get acquainted with Cuzco, once the heart of the Inca empire, before beginning the epic Inca trail trek. Adjust to the altitude by discovering this magical city's mix of Spanish colonial-style architecture, Inca ruins and b aroque churches. Unravel the history of Peru in these fascinating city streets or, for a change of pace, visit Cuzco's central market and browse the stalls alongside the Quechua-speaking Inca descendants. Here it's possible to pick up some alpaca goods, colourful Andean handicrafts or even a few lucky charms.
Embark on the historic Inca Trail hike, a demanding four day journey that is incredibly rewarding, as it passes through amazing and diverse scenery dotted with ancient ruins. Trek over high mountain passes, wake up each morning to see breathtaking mountain vistas and gain an appreciation for the diversity of Peru's terrain. Rise early on the final morning and climb the steps to the Sun Gate; see the ruins of Machu Picchu unfold in front of you - this unforgettable spectacle makes tired muscles become a distant memory. Spend the day exploring this huge archaeological site before relaxing on the return trip to Cuzco.
With the Inca trail completed, it's well worth spending a few extra days in Cuzco to soak up more Inca culture and history. Perhaps explore the surrounding hills by mountain bike or join one of the many jungle adventure tours that depart from this city. With markets, cobblestone streets, a vibrant restaurant scene and surrounding mountain vistas, Cuzco is a truly unique place to visit.
