Day 1 Lima

Take in Lima's major sights and attractions on a walking tour of Peru's history-steeped capital. Use free time to explore the dark tunnels of Monasterio de San Francisco's eerie underground cemetery, or seek out Lima's restaurant and night scene in funky Miraflores.

Day 2 Cuzco

Get acquainted with Peru's heartlands in subtle but seductive Cuzco. An intriguing mix of Inca and Spanish cultures and architecture make this a very pleasant place to explore and unwind in. Head to the cathedrals and museums for a cultural fix or wile away the hours at one of the many local artisan markets.

Day 3 Sacred Valley/Ollantaytambo

Admire the picturesque scenery and changing landscapes on a drive through the beautiful Sacred Valley. Learn about the local lifestyle during a community visit and perhaps pick up a few phrases in Quechua. Spend the night in the ancient Inca stronghold of Ollantaytambo.

Days 4-5 Cuzco

With ample free time – and an entry ticket to many of the city's fascinating attractions – Cuzco is perfectly suited to some independent exploration. A trek out to see the archaeological sites of Saqsayhuaman, Qenqo and Tambomachay is certainly recommended, as is a visit to the Coca Museum.

Day 6 Aguas Calientes

Travel by train from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes through the winding, fertile Urubamba Valley. Aguas Calientes is the gateway to Machu Picchu and home to some simmering hot springs that make for a relaxing soak. Alternatively, set out on a short walk to a nearby waterfall or butterfly farm.

Day 7 Machu Picchu/Cuzco

Wake early for a morning bus ride to monumental Machu Picchu. Spend the day exploring the ancient ruins with a local guide, marvelling at the timeworn vestiges of a once-powerful empire. The scale of Machu Picchu is truly impressive and offers many iconic photo opportunities. Return to the quiet charm of Cuzco after a day of awesome sightseeing.

Spend a final day sampling Cuzco's local cuisine or browsing its colourful shops and markets for kooky souvenirs.
