Day 1 Port Moresby

Arrive in Papua New Guinea’s unique capital, a former colonial settlement that sits on the shores of the Gulf of Papua. Those seeking to get to know their fellow trekkers have the option of an introductory dinner in one of Port Moresby’s multicultural restaurants.

Day 2 Owers Corner/Ioribaiwa

Drive towards Ower’s Corner and contemplate the sacrifices made on this arduous route by visiting the Bomana War Cemetery – the final resting place of 3,600 brave soldiers. On reaching Ower’s Corner, descend down a steep section of track, getting wet to the waist crossing Goldie Creek. Continue on to Va’Ule Creek, a series of 14 small creeks to cross, before reaching Ioribaiwa Ridge, the final stronghold of the Japanese. On a clear day, it is possible to glimpse Port Moresby in the distance.

Day 3 Nauro

Head to Ofi Creek and tackle two tough climbs before the steep descent into the valley. Begin to appreciate the difficult terrain that Australian, Japanese and American troops endured, often under fire. Refuel during a pitstop before the trek to Jap’s Ladder – the Japanese version of the Golden Staircase - before the final stretch up and over Maguli Ridge and along a steep descent into Nauro village. Relax creekside tonight, looking out over the beautiful Nauro Valley.

Day 4 Efogi

Start the day trekking through the swampy marshlands of the Nauro Valley before crossing the often-raging Brown River. It’s a steep and challenging ascent towards Mernari Ridge peak, but the spectacular views are well worth it. Be welcomed in Menari village before continuing on to Brigade Hill, a significant battle site. Take a break here, learning about its history, before making tracks for Efogi II and then I – another difficult climb.

Day 5 Digger's Camp

Begin the morning hiking to Naduri Village. Then, step onto Mt Bellamy, which offers some jaw-dropping views over the Owen Stanley Ranges, and continue along a relatively flat walk toward Digger’s Camp. Once rested, take a walk to the very pretty Myola Plains.

Day 6 Templeton's Crossing II

Set off across swampy plains to 1900 Crossing. Then tackle the highest point of the trek, the hike up to the summit of Mt Bellamy. This stretch of the trail can be very difficult, with mud often being knee-deep after it rains. From here, continue to the Kokoda Gap and on to Templeton’s Crossing I for a well-deserved lunch break. Follow a path through the Iora Creek Valley and onwards to Templeton’s Crossing II, where camp is waiting. Keep an eye out for the iron rods surrounding the area – they sadly symbolise the soldiers that fell here.

Day 7 Isurava

Rise early for the long journey to Isurava village. Head towards Iora Creek, where heavy fighting took place between advancing Japanese and retreating Australians. Then wind through valleys, forests, jungle and waterways before heading upwards to the friendly village of Alola, which has amazing views over the Kokoda Valley. After lunch, climb through choko fields and rough terrain to the moving Isurava Memorial, which has the words ‘Courage, Sacrifice, Mateship and Endurance’ carved into four tall pillars. Enjoy the first running water that isn’t in a river at tonight’s comfortable guesthouse.

Day 8 Kokoda

Welcome the final day of trekking with a three-hour walk to Deniki village, an incredible spot that overlooks the whole of the Kokoda Valley. Then make tracks to Kokoda Station, our final destination. With weary feet and an exhilarated mood, drop gear at the guesthouse and simply relax - or celebrate this monumental feat with a swim in the nearby river, a visit to the Kokoda Memorial or a drink at the local watering hole.
