Tailor-made itinerary

Marrakech is an energetic, colourful city, full of vibrancy and life – it’s exotic to the core. Be enthralled by street entertainers in the city’s main square (Djemaa-El-Fna) while nibbling on delicious local pastries and drinking freshly-squeezed orange juice.

Night-time is, arguably, when Marrakech is at its best, and you may have time to step-out and explore today, depending on your arrival time into Morocco.

Overnight: Hotel Le Caspien or similar

Today, drive into the towering High Atlas Mountains to the small village of Imlil, from where you’ll trek amidst snow-covered peaks and flowered valleys to Aroumd, accompanied by your trusty mule companions; they’ll carry your luggage, and you, if you need a break!

Tonight, you’ll stay in a family-run mountain home (gite) where you’ll be welcomed by your Berber hosts, and enjoy freshly-baked bread and delicious food to replenish those energy levels…

Overnight: Gite Omar Id Mansour or similar

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

This morning, journey over Morocco's highest pass, Tizi n'Tichka (2,260 metres), to Ait Benhaddou, one of Morocco's most iconic sites, on the edge of the Saharan desert. Its grand Kasbah is a World Heritage Site and used in famous films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones and Gladiator. Walk the winding streets of the old town, enjoying stunning views of the plains below.

We can also arrange a local cooking demonstration tonight, if you wish.

Overnight: Riad Maktoub or similar

Meals: Breakfast, dinner

From Tamegroute, climb atop your trusty camel for a desert ride to your next mode of transport – 4WD vehicles. Bumping along rough tracks in the Hamada desert, you’ll reach the huge Erg Chigaga dunes. Erg Chigaga is one of the world's most iconic landscapes, with towering dunes up to 150 metres tall.

Camp out in the desert – it’s fairly basic but you’ll have mattresses and bedding to cosy-up in, as you watch the night stars twinkling high above the dunes.

Overnight: Dune camp (multi-share)

Today, you’ll venture towards the market town of Taroudannt, sometimes called ‘Little Marrakech’. You’ll pass through deserts, and see indigenous Argan trees; Argan oil is exclusive to Morocco and renowned for its culinary, cosmetic and medicinal uses. After a long travel day, relax at your riad (house) with a dip in the pool or a steam bath.

Overnight: Riad Hida or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Travel to the quaint, delightful, coastal town of Essaouira. Within its stone ramparts, you’ll find cobbled streets lined with artisan shops, white-washed houses and photogenic pastel buildings.

The town is also surrounded by long, sandy beaches, and its pretty harbour is filled with tiny colourful boats which go out every morning for the day’s catch. We’d recommend you try a local seafood dinner this evening in one of the little eateries along the shore.

Overnight: Maison de Sud or similar

Meals: Breakfast

This morning, a knowledgeable local guide will accompany you on a walking tour through the old medina, Jewish mellah, port and skala (sea wall). The afternoon is free for you to wander the cobbled streets of the old town, watch the daily catch come-in or laze on the beaches that so inspired Jimi Hendrix and Orson Welles!

Overnight: Maison de Sud or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Leaving Essaouira by local bus, you arrive back in Marrakech with a little time to explore. You could take the opportunity to see the famous Koutoubia Mosque, the tropical gardens of French painter Jacques Majorelle (now owned by Yves Saint Laurent) or the Palais Bahia, a superb example of Muslim architecture. Why not take your last dinner overlooking the frenetic Djemaa El-Fna – a great way to finish your Moroccan adventure.

Overnight: Hotel Le Caspien or similar

Time to leave this wonderful country behind. If you wish, we can book you extra nights to explore Marrakech some more, or flights that allow you to make the most of your last day.

Meals: Breakfast

Frequently asked questions

On a standard group trip you travel on a set date and itinerary with other people who you may not know. A private group – whether that’s a private departure or tailor-made - is yours exclusively for your family and friends.

On a private departure, you travel on one of our 1,000+ pre-designed group trips on a date of your choice. The idea is you experience the itinerary as many others have enjoyed it before you, but sharing those special moments just between you and your friends.

A tailor-made holiday offers complete flexibility. You can choose the dates, activities, accommodation, transport, special highlights and things you’ve always wanted to see – and we will plan you an itinerary for your budget, whatever that may be.

Intrepid has 1,000+ group trips that cover most of the world. We can plan a private departure for you on most of these. There will be exceptions, usually because logistics and price make it prohibitive to offer the trip but, as a rule, we can do it!

For tailor-made, the suggested itineraries you see on our website are in our favourite destinations. We know these countries well and can deliver a fantastic, bespoke experience in each of them. Because we’re Intrepid, we also have a vast network of global suppliers and trust them to operate wonderful holidays for our customers worldwide. If you don’t see an itinerary or country on our website that you fancy, call us, and we’ll most likely be able to help you.

To and from the UK - yes, we certainly can. And we only add a nominal fee to do it. You can also book your own flights, if you wish. Those travelling from outside the UK would be best to book their own, because it’s likely to be cheaper.

For private departures, it depends on which trip you’d like to travel on. For bigger groups – eight upwards – we can often give you the itinerary at the price you see on the website. We also offer a discount for larger groups, and can include a free-of-charge place for 10+ people, so it might work out cheaper.

A tailor-made itinerary is designed to your budget, so you set the price. You tell us what you want to spend and we will do our very best to deliver your itinerary to that specification. We also have to be realistic – 5* hotels are, of course, a lot more expensive than a hostel. But we have lots of ideas, knowledge and operational experience to help you get the holiday you want at the price you want – and we’ll make suggestions to help you achieve that. For example, we might suggest using a train or local bus for one journey, rather than a private charter; that way you save money, as well as getting a fantastic local experience!

Whatever you choose. We can book anything from homestays to jungle lodges to indulgent beach properties. We always try to use locally-run, characterful properties where we can.

We use a variety of transport to suit the itinerary, destination, terrain and budget for the trip. We could take you from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang by overnight train, or plane. Hop aboard a local bus in Thailand, or sit back in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle in India. 4WDs are a great way to safari and camels are the ships of the desert. Getting there is all part of the fun.

If you’ve asked us to, we will make sure someone is there to pick you up on arrival at the airport and take you to your first accommodation. Here, your leader or guide will brief you on your itinerary. From there, Intrepid takes care of the logistics. Together with our local suppliers, we will arrange your accommodation, transport, guides and excursions, where they are included. We will smooth the way, so you can get on with enjoying your travels.

You’ll have the full backing of our 24/7 emergency contacts. The joy of a private group? As it’s just you and your friends if you do want to make a slight tweak to the itinerary along the way, such as an extra photo stop, we’ll do our best to accommodate…

Your very helpful and friendly approach made our group decide to book our trip through intrepid. You really seemed to care about what we wanted and were very thoughtful, putting yourself in our shoes.
