Itinerary

Stroll through the grand cathedrals and faded colonial air of Nicaragua's oldest city. Set off on a guided tour that takes in the nearby volcano and crater lakes, then pick through the kooky wares on offer at the Masaya market.
Motor boat out to Ometepe Island. The two volcanoes that inspired the island's name are a spectacular sight, and active souls can opt to conquer Madera's peak on a day hike. Alternatively, simply lie back on the lakeside sands and watch the tide drift in.
Cross into the verdant, rolling highlands of Costa Rica's north. An isolated region of stark volcanic peaks, bubbling mud pools and glorious blue waterfalls, you'll half expect to spot a dinosaur roaming through Rincon de la Vieja's Jurassic landscape.
Get carried away in San Jose. Explore the city's lively markets during the day and suss out its steaming night-life in the evening. The Gold Museum is well worth a visit, or head to the nearby butterfly farm for a glimpse of nature at its dazzling best before this sensational Central American journey winds up.
